was founded on one core belief: despite the teacher shortage, there are many out there who want to teach. But we've put too many barriers in their way. TeachStart dismantles those barriers, growing today’s teacher workforce and proving what’s possible when we invest in educators.

TeachStart is 2 years in, and we’ve proven our model. We hire aspiring teachers to work full-time as substitute teachers, during which time educators receive best-in-class training, earn a debt-free teaching credential, and gain meaningful experience in schools. The model works: we've recruited 600 educators so far, and 70% of them are of color. We’re growing to 4 states this coming school year, quickly becoming a leader in the space.

We specialize in substitute staffing, and get up every morning striving to place the right teacher into the right classroom.

The Role

We’re seeking a Director of Operations to drive our expansion to new markets and to 6X our impact in the next 24 months. We aim to reach 3,000 educators (called Fellows) in the next 2 years, across 6-8 states. We need an expert strategist who’s both a planner and a doer. In this role, you’ll:

• Design and implement our operational systems to scale from 400 Fellow a year to 3,000 Fellows a year
• Build our infrastructure to operate across 4 states, including data systems; credentialing and permitting; internal learning; program operations; and communication and collaboration
• Influence our team of 30 educator managers to adopt operational practices that support our schools and our educators
• Build scalable systems alongside our partners at , with whom you’ll collaborate closely on payroll, technology, and human resources systems
• Ensure seamless operations for all Fellow programming, including in-person and remote trainings
• Operate, always, with integrity, focus on impact, and team spirit
• Manage, coach and develop a team of 1-3 FTE to execute on your vision
• Hold the big picture and the nitty-gritty. Since we’re a small and growing team, we all wear many hats. You’re the right fit if you’re energized by the opportunity to jump right into it with us
• Report directly to TeachStart’s Executive Director and serve as a member of TeachStart’s leadership team

Who You Are

You bring 8-10 years of experience leading operations, systems building, or data infrastructure for a for-profit or non-profit. You’re creative, team-oriented, and excited about building something new. You love a challenge and pivot easily and eagerly when context changes. Ideally, you also bring experience in K-12 education. You are a great lateral manager and influencer who can drive action and change across a matrixed organization. You are mission-driven and believe deeply in the potential of all students.
