Communications Manager

Tech:NYC is an engaged network of tech leaders working to foster a dynamic, diverse, and creative New York. Leveraging our network, Tech:NYC advocates for policies that support the growth of technology companies and technology talent in NYC; promote inclusion and diversity; and create access for all New Yorkers to connectivity, tools, and training. We represent the city’s fast-growing, entrepreneurial high-tech industry with government, civic institutions, in business and public policy forums, and the media. This is an exciting time to join Tech:NYC as we launch several high-profile, high-impact initiatives and expand our team.

In this newly created and high-visibility role, we are seeking a skilled Communications Manager to contribute to and execute Tech:NYC’s communications strategy across multiple channels and work streams. Tech:NYC releases content related to NYS and NYC policy, tech industry news, and livability in New York City. The Communications Manager will report to the Director of Marketing & Communications and work collaboratively with the Tech:NYC team and communications agencies to create compelling, creative storytelling that advances our programmatic and policy work, engages our members, and raises the visibility of NYC’s tech ecosystem. This includes external communications (newsletter, blog, etc), media relations (press releases, reporter relations, etc), and internal communications (member communication). The Communications Manager role requires an interest and knowledge of the political and policy landscape of New York, and will spend a significant amount of time contributing to this workstream.

Responsibilities:

  • Increase visibility of Tech:NYC’s programmatic and policy work through content creation across digital channels including website, blog, email, and social media.
  • Manage policy communications in order to engage members and amplify our work, including through member emails and talking points for Tech:NYC spokespeople.
  • Manage and execute our communications strategy: Maintain an editorial calendar to deliver timely, high-quality content. With support from subject matter experts, lead and create compelling content including blog posts, email newsletters, and member reports.
  • Oversee our flagship Daily Digest newsletter with support from Editorial Fellow/newsletter writer.
  • Create quarterly snapshots of ecosystem activity across venture fundraising, real estate, employment, and more. Maintain up-to-date research about the New York tech ecosystem for media, website, and member communications.
  • Manage and drive our social media presence, ensuring consistent brand voice, engaging with our audience, and integrating into communications plans.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to publish and amplify high-visibility reports and publications.
  • Manage and update our website to ensure that it reflects our work and serves as a resource for the tech ecosystem.
  • With support of an external agency, build media relations including crafting thought leadership and op-eds, drafting press releases, and expanding our network of communications contacts.
  • Collaborate on executive communications, including preparing talking points for Tech:NYC CEO and spokespeople to align and amplify organization’s storytelling.
  • Develop thought leadership and programming, including preparing high-profile speakers, for events produced by Tech:NYC.
  • Act as an editor across all content, creating clear guidelines for the Tech:NYC team, Editorial Fellows, and freelancers.
  • Represent Tech:NYC at industry events to build and track networks and relationships.

Requirements:

  • 5 years of experience in communications, journalism, public affairs, or related field. Business or policy reporting is a plus
  • Required: Familiarity with the political landscape and policy of New York, the tech industry, and associated policy issues
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small team
  • Experience with email marketing platforms and social media (LinkedIn, X).
  • Excellent project management skills, with the capacity to effectively incorporate feedback and synthesize ideas
  • Attention to detail, strong time-management skills, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with website content management systems (CMS) and design tools (Canva/Photoshop) are a plus
  • Writing samples or portfolio demonstrating capabilities

Salary Range & Benefits:

The target range of base salary in this role is $80,000-110,000. In addition to base salary, Tech:NYC considers other key components as part of total compensation, including annual holiday and benefits. Actual base compensation is influenced by a wide array of candidate factors, such as skill set and level of experience. Tech:NYC provides a generous benefits package including excellent coverage for health, vision, and dental insurance premiums; paid parental leave; time off including vacation, holidays, and sick time; and reimbursement for cellular service.

Additional Requirements:
