Tool & Die / Mold Tech Job Description

JOB DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assemble and disassemble a variety of injection molding tools for general maintenance, repairs, and revisions.
  • Inspect tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures for condition and conformance to tooling standards.
  • Comprehend specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions.
  • Visualize product to determine materials required and machines used to fabricate parts.
  • Setup and operate tool room equipment needed to build, repair, revise and service molds, fixtures and related tools in a correct and timely manner. Including, but not limited to: manual and/or CNC controlled lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
  • Maneuver and secure machined parts and tools on a surface plate or worktable.
  • Fit and assemble smooth and contoured parts together and into assemblies.
  • Use hand tools, machine shop gages, indicators and other measurement equipment to verify conformance
  • Connect wiring and hydraulic lines for electrical and hydraulic components.
  • Compute dimensions, plan layout and determine assembly method and sequence of operations.
  • Verify conformance of dimensions, alignments, and clearances of machined parts to specifications with the use of hand tools, machine shop gages, indicators and other measurement equipment.
  • Use CAD system to determine size of components to be machined.
  • Recommend design modifications regarding construction and function of mold assemblies.
  • Draw or sketch design of concept ideas to be evaluated by other team members.
  • Observe injection molding machine operation to detect tool and die malfunctions, provide solutions to address the problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Close out electronic work orders for tooling projects and enter tooling notes into electronic database.
  • Transports tools and dies between production area and tool room using a forklift.
  • Operate overhead hoist/crane to position tools and dies.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Journeyworkers Card in Tool & Die Making with a minimum of 5 years’ experience is preferred; will consider eight years of documented experience without a Journeyworkers Card.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience using hand operated tool room equipment with experience in a tool room involving plastic injection mold repair or mold maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Plastic Injection Molding tool design and construction.
  • Knowledge of plastic injection mold making terminology.
  • Able to read and comprehend blue prints and tool drawings.
  • Able to read machine shop gages and indicators.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office products, CAD)
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and attention to detail skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members or other employees in the organization.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze objective data and draw valid conclusions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • CNC wire and sinker experience is a plus.
