Tetra Tech Careers is Hiring an Aquatic Ecologist Near Owings Mills, MD

Tetra Tech is currently seeking an entry/mid-level Aquatic Ecologist for its Owings Mills, MD office. The successful candidate will work as a team member to support various projects of substantial variety and complexity, typically under the direct supervision of a Project Manager. This position will support field, GIS, and laboratory activities for a variety of clients including federal, state, and local governments, as well as private companies.

Your Role:

  • Conduct field surveys for macroinvertebrate, fish, and habitat features, potentially including taxonomic identifications.
  • Operate a variety of boats for conducting field surveys including sampling of surface water, sediment, and aquatic biota
  • Assist in vegetative surveys and mapping (wetland and forest delineations)
  • Support project managers in data analysis and report preparation for biological survey data
  • Perform writing assignments to contribute to project documentation and deliverables such as memos and reports 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology, environmental science, biology, or a related field
  • 1-2 years field experience 
  • Familiarity or experience with aquatic ecological surveys, physical habitat assessment, stream channel evaluation, water/sediment sampling methods and equipment, and boat operation 
  • Experience in fish surveys, both freshwater and marine. This includes experience with electrofishing, trawling, seining, and similar fish collection gear
  • Must be willing to travel
  • An ability to think critically to formulate and solve problems related to hydrology, water quality, and ecological processes
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to summarize and present scientific data and model outputs in concise, readable language and figures
  • Either have or can obtain within two months of hire a Maryland Safe Boating Certificate
  • Must be computer literate and have knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and ArcGIS
