Job DescriptionGlimpse of the JobThe Director of Social Media at Texas A&M University leads the university's social media strategy, overseeing the curation of content, engagement, and incident response on the primary social channels, while also guiding social governance and training across the institution. The Director leads a team that is responsible for driving, tracking, and monitoring audience growth and engagement on a 24/7 basis, exercising broad discretion and judgment to respond on the university's behalf, and positions the institution to both preserve and elevate its reputation with existing and new target audiences, in Texas and beyond.

Position Details: Employee will supervise (5) Student interns, Communications Specialist, and Social Media and Communications Manager
QualificationsRequired Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or business management or equivalent combination or education and experience
  • Ten years of communications and/or marketing experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum three years of experience directing and managing an institutional social media team and presence with significant engagement and followership
  • Experience in higher education, social media leadership-role preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to grow social media following, affinity, and engagement, particularly outside of traditional student, in-state, and alumni audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to specifically help craft and implement strategies that grow an organization’s following and engagement on YouTube; collaborate to tailor, curate, and execute emotive video storytelling across other social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram
  • Demonstrated experience managing and executing across multiple digital communications and marketing channels and media; highly developed skills in communications writing and editing, and video concepting and production
  • Highly collaborative style with experience developing and implementing communications strategies successfully; background that demonstrates relationship-building, consensus-building, flexibility, and managing through influencing
  • Evidence of high-energy leadership style with a track record for leading both strategic and tactical communications efforts
  • Demonstrated computer competency with common and specialized production software suites, including social media monitoring and tracking suites (Sprout Social, Sprinklr, Brandwatch, RivalIQ, etc.), and analytics reporting software
  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of individual social media platforms (including YouTube, Facebook, X, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Be Real)
  • Experience and working knowledge of paid social media advertising strategies and techniques across various social media platforms
  • Ability to provide quick turnaround and updates for multiple requests while maintaining strong reputation for high-quality work
  • Experience working in and/or with large-scale organizations which utilize processes to review and approve ideas and enterprise solutions to deliver services
  • Exhibit behavior that supports the mission, vision, and values of the University
  • Communicate and employ interpersonal actions that model high standards of professional, responsible, accountable, and ethical conduct
  • Willing and able to adjust to changing demands and shifting priorities
Essential Duties/Tasks
  • Strategy - Serve as the lead manager and strategist for the university's social media platforms. Lead team that crafts and executes a comprehensive social editorial calendar that reaches target audiences, achieves brand message balance, drives marketing and promotional campaigns, and advances the university's strategic priorities. Craft, review, edit, and recommend promotional and informational campaigns, social media posts, and other marketing and communications products (including, but not limited to videos, photos, visual elements, etc). Ensure the compliance, integrity, high quality, and consistency of the university's voice, style, narrative, visual, and brand. Optimize content plans for individual social platforms based on goals and audience/s.
  • Manage Team - Direct, manage, coach, and develop team and personnel. Hire, supervise, and train full-time social media personnel, students, freelance partners and third-party partners to provide services necessary to carry out business functions and fulfill responsibilities. Coach team members to maximize creativity, productivity, transparency, effectiveness, and overall performance and results. Focus team on a social media strategy, including YouTube, that helps propels Texas A&M’s national reputation and its permanent place in desired national conversations.
  • Monitor and Collaborate - Lead and guide social listening efforts; track trending daily news and topics of potential relevance, monitor university social channels, and respond/act on a 24/7 basis to ensure the university is positioned optimally. Collaborate with Public and Media Relations teams and university leadership and recommend response strategies.
  • Analytics - Manage and support a data-driven and evidenced-based decision-support environment. Collaborate with data analytics team to collect, review, analyze, and evaluate data metrics and analytics to inform strategy and measure performance.
  • Thought Leadership - Serve as the institution's thought leader on social media strategy. Lead campus-wide social media governance and operations. Advance policies, procedures, and best practices that improve social media strategy across campus. Cultivate and steward relationships with key stakeholders, build consensus to achieve successful outcomes, and promote a culture of transparency, collaboration, and creativity.
  • Professional Development - Further thought leadership on marketing and communications topics by staying abreast of emerging trends, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development engagements, and delivering presentations to inform, educate, and inspire.
  • Project Management - Collaborate with colleagues to bring social media campaigns, strategy, and activations into events and experiences.
