GENERAL DESCRIPTION

TJJD effectively addresses the multiple and complex needs of the youth committed to the agency and their families through a trauma informed multi-disciplinary integrated approach that includes implementation of the agency approved Texas Model of Trauma Informed Corrections. The Violence Intervention Continuum (VIC) is a series of programs designed to provide effective interventions targeted at reducing aggression and violence.
Oversees the day-to-day programming of the VIC programs and reports directly to the Deputy Director of Treatment Programs. Performs advanced (senior-level) managerial work overseeing the daily implementation and activities of the treatment programs. Work involves establishing goals and objectives, developing guidelines, procedures, and policies; developing schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving established goals; coordinating and evaluating unit activities; and leading a team of case managers and direct care staff in administering the program to youth while collaborating with psychology, psychiatry, and nursing health professionals. Supervises the intake, assessment and treatment processes of youth referred into the program; by providing consultation and training to TJJD staff and other stakeholders; supervises the delivery of services including groups, family, and individual counseling. Ensures appropriate discharge and transition activities occur to ensure coordination of treatment service delivery upon release to another facility, halfway house, or into the community. May serve as a multi-disciplinary team member and collaborates with case managers, education staff, youth development coaches, and parole officers. Has direct oversight of all TJJD staff assigned to the VIC.
Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per workweek, be on-call, and travel occasionally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Oversees the implementation of the VIC programming and adherence to programming protocols.
Monitors and ensures effective suicide prevention through suicide risk assessments, and suicide alert monitoring.
Ensures youth receive appropriate VIC treatment programming based on their risk-responsivity needs.
Oversees a range of trauma informed therapeutic services. Emphasizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and the need for building skillful behavior to reduce future risk of offending through including individual, group, milieu interventions/therapies.
Provides specialized consultation to TJJD staff including other mental health professionals, administrative staff, coaches, case managers, and education staff on assessment, treatment, adaptations and modifications, intervention, clinical and behavioral management of youth with high aggression and violence risk.
Contributes to the development, maintenance and delivery of in-service training designed to improve the clinical performance of facility staff (e.g., suicide prevention training, non-suicidal self-injury, trauma treatment, and other specialized training).
Documents services provided and ensured VIC documentation is completed in accordance with policy and procedure.
Collaborates with administrators, mental health professionals and others to meet established objectives and goals; identifies concerns and trends, service gaps, and areas that are barriers to treatment; and recommends improvements to resolve problems or enhance operations.
Supervision of leadership staff within the VIC.

Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:

  • Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.
  • Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested timeframes.

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.

Monitors outcomes for racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and takes action to address identified disparities.

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, counseling or a related field.

Independent licensure in the State of Texas to practice as a licensed professional counselor, social worker, marriage and family therapist, psychological associate or psychologist.

If the candidate is not licensed in the state of Texas, they identify a plan for licensure within the first six months of their start date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Clinical experience in a correctional and/or psychiatric health care setting.
  • Experience with Trauma Informed Care and violence reduction strategies.
  • Experience working with adolescent offenders in residential settings.
  • Experience with treatment with youth and their families in the areas of aggression, substance use, sexual behavioral problems, and youth with mental health diagnoses.
  • Supervisory experience.

Note: Any degree(s), semester hours, diploma(s), or high school equivalent required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.

Requirements for Continued Employment:

  • Obtain and maintain certification in the TJJD approved use of force techniques.
  • Obtain and maintain certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Failure to obtain/maintain the required certification or license and remain in good standing is grounds for termination of employment.
  • This position is subject to mandatory pre-employment drug testing and any offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results from a drug screen conducted for the agency.

  • Skill and the willingness to physically restrain youth in the appropriate manner, maintain order and discipline, and act quickly in emergencies.
