ACLU-WA is seeking a full-time Human Resources Manager (HR Manager). In partnership with the Human Resources & Equity Director, the HR Manager will focus on building relationships across the organization, while creating a positive workplace for staff throughout their entire employee lifecycle. The HR Manager will primarily support the day-to-day Human Resources functions including employee relations, benefits administration, staff onboarding, offboarding and administrative responsibilities, ensuring that HR programs and practices are documented, completed with accuracy on a timely basis, comply with state and federal labor laws and ACLU-WA policies and procedures. The HR Manager assists with the execution of a wide range of sensitive and confidential matters with a high level of customer service in support of ACLU-WA’s mission, vision, values and strategic priorities. The position will help maintain and further build a robust system of HR systems and structures that center on the ACLU-WA’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (EDIB) while ensuring that the organization meets regulatory and nonprofit next practices.
The HR Manager is a part of the People Services Group. People Services is the backbone of the organization, working to support our staff with the understanding that advancing racial justice starts internally through the vendors we select, the policies we create, and the culture we build.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create, refine, and maintain clear, responsive, and accessible HR systems for staff
  • Serve as human resources point of contact, responding to employee inquiries in a timely manner while providing a high level of service
  • Manage recruitment efforts, including job postings, application review, interviews, reference checks, and offers
  • Administer the successful orientation of new hires, ensuring staff feel welcomed and set up for success
  • Conduct offboarding activities to ensure employees have a quality exit experience
  • Administration of staff benefits including health, dental, vision, retirement plan, and other insurance benefits
  • Support staff in resolving interpersonal conflicts with colleagues with a focus on building relationships and centering humanity
  • Develop improvements as needed to staff evaluation system, orientation, onboarding, career development, wellness and training programs
  • Identify, recommend, and implement operational improvements to streamline HR processes and procedures.
  • Ensure HR documents including the employee handbook, policies, job descriptions and forms are updated, accurate and stored in a secure and consistent manner.
  • Prepare materials for audits, benefits renewals, annual compliance filings
  • Manage leaves of absence requests, making sure they are effectively communicated, documented, and tracked according to organizational policy, state and federal requirements
  • Ensure accuracy and confidentiality of employee records
  • Assist with the administration of compensation
  • Support training and development programs.
  • Partner with staff to support their professional development and ensure consistent and positive practices across the organization
  • Maintain knowledge of employment law and legal requirements related to HR, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Handle a wide range of sensitive issues and confidential documents with discretion and good judgment.
  • Participate in and help lead ACLU-WA’s work to promote, and protect a respectful, equitable workplace of belonging, including staying apprised of and implementing best practices in EDIB
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A strong commitment to the mission, vision, values, and goals of the ACLU-WA
  • Knowledge and understanding of how power and oppression is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability, citizenship, and socio-economic circumstances
  • 5 years relevant human resources experiences, including demonstrated expertise in policy and benefits administration (both legal requirements and best practices), strong knowledge of HR best practices, employee relations, coaching, staffing and recruitment, salary administration, training, performance management, staff and leadership development
  • Exceptional time management and organization
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve challenges in a timely manner using advanced critical thinking skills
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, or Organizational Development, preferred. HR designation such as SHRM preferred
  • Successful experience with and talent for creating and managing systems
  • A thorough understanding of all areas of information systems with a technical understanding of at least one commercial HRIS product is preferred
  • Proven commitment to EDIB as core values and a passion about civil rights and civil liberties
  • Trustworthy with excellent judgment and experience exercising discretion and upholding the highest level of confidentiality
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to build relationships across the organization, while holding space for differences
LOCATION: Seattle, Washington

WORK ENVIRONMENTS/CONDITIONS: The ACLU-WA observes a hybrid workstyle, with some staff working primarily remotely while others work in the office several days a week. The position requires maintaining some physical file records and word processing and is expected to observe an in-person hybrid workstyle. This position is required to work in the office a minimum of two (2) days per week.Our office is generally open between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and is located in downtown Seattle. The physical demands and work environment described below represent those required and encountered by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job. MENTAL DEMAND: Decision-making, high emotional intelligence, giving and receiving feedback and building trusting relationships. The nature of this work can be emotionally demanding and requires thoughtful and clear communication and resilience.
TOTAL COMPENSATION: The ACLU-WA seeks to provide equitable and competitive compensation for attracting and retaining staff with the skill, judgment, and perseverance to confront challenges to civil rights and civil liberties and build a state where all people live with dignity and equity, enjoying freedoms unimpeded by racial and economic injustice and other forms of oppression. We provide a mix of compensation for staff that is intended to address today’s needs and allow planning for tomorrow and into retirement. As such, the ACLU-WA has adopted a salary scale for measuring how to best compensate its employees. The salary for this position is $103,123 – 109,922. A range indicates the intention to accommodate those with varying years of relevant experience, as determined by the salary scale.
BENEFITS: Generous benefits include three weeks of vacation, thirteen sick days with an additional ten days given in 2024, fifteen holidays, employer-paid professional development, fully paid employee medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance, an employer contributed retirement plan, student loan reimbursement, family care and adoption assistance, life insurance, and an ORCA card, the regional transportation pass.
ACLU-WA provides laptops, home office supplies, certain equipment, and technology support. You will need an effective Wi-Fi connection and a way to communicate by phone. This position is eligible for either a work phone or phone stipend, as well as an additional $150 stipend each month to help cover any additional costs while working from home.
