Dean of Students
About the position
The Dean of Students will play a critical role in creating learning environments where love, learning and leadership coexist. To do so, the Dean of Students will build strong, cohesive systems that create and sustain positive school culture, inspire scholars to do the right thing when no one is watching and build powerful relationships between scholars, teachers and families. Reporting to the principal, they will embed the core values of the school into day-to-day functions of the school and the community, achieve the school culture outcomes and proactively create spaces of connectedness through all layers of the school. They will work to ensure that our families are valued, their school is cared for and the scholars are able to thrive. The Dean of Students will ensure all families have a meaningful seat at the table in important discussions about our scholars and schools; they will hold families accountable to the visions and goals of the school and they will motivate positive school culture that embodies the four pillars of Courage, Creativity,
Confidence, and Community.
This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative systems leader who enjoys creating a culture of connectedness, empowerment and self-worth. They must have a desire to create mindsets in adults that ensure there will be no scholar who is unable to reach their full potential because of the challenges they may face day-to-day, beyond or within our school walls.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
School Culture Leadership
∙ They will drive fidelity of school culture systems across the school, including behavior management, attendance and more
∙ Analyze school-wide culture data and make adjustments to ensure allegiance to common goal
∙ Observe and give feedback on school-wide systems and classroom culture
∙ Coach teachers in developing and maintaining high expectations for scholars and the learning environment they are expected to thrive in
∙ Coach and model how to build strong, mutually respectful relationships with scholars and families grounded in our district’s core values
∙ Perform other duties, as assigned
Culture Development
∙ Identify at-risk scholars and work with Response To Intervention team to ensure proper support
∙ Ensure parent participation at all school events, when appropriate, and actively seek out opportunities to foster partnerships between parents and the school
∙ Maximize full parent engagement for high priority school events including parent-teacher conferences, math and reading workshops, school events and activities, etc.
∙ Identify community partners to supplement scholar and school supports, as needed
∙ Perform other duties, as assigned
Systems Development and Implementation
∙ Assist teachers in implementing and taking ownership of classroom procedures and systems
∙ Implement detailed systems that ensure an effective school day including classroom transitions, morning arrival, end of day departures, school-wide transitions, cafeteria protocol and playground/recess protocol, etc.
∙ Track scholar performance according to merit system and ensure appropriate delivery of awards
∙ Work with administration to ensure implementation and accuracy of disciplinary systems
∙ Coordinate/manage all after school activities: identify programs offered, develop comprehensive calendar, identify resources needed to enable sustainable implementation
∙ Implement culture and climate readiness processes across school
∙ Actively seek out ways to incorporate joy into the daily school routine, including upkeep of signage and designated school-wide bulletin boards and display cases
∙ Perform other duties, as assigned
Candidate Requirements:
∙ A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; master’s degree in education, counseling, or psychology preferred (but not mandatory)
∙ 1-3 years of leadership experience in a high-performing organization, leading a high performing school or department with proven and documented scholar outcomes and/or school impact
∙ Track record of successfully meeting or exceeding targets and achieving ambitious goals, including data that demonstrates significant organizational or departmental impact
∙ Ability to make strong relationships that are professionally balanced with key performance metrics
∙ Strong people and organizational management skills, with a track record of developing and empowering communities at-large to galvanize around a vision and direction
∙ Ability to overcome challenges in creating improvements in low-performing settings
∙ Ability to analyze data and create actionable, evidence-based plans rooted in that information
∙ An ability to create systems and processes that do not exists with small or large teams
∙ An unwavering belief in our school’s pillars and mission
∙ Experience in urban education and/or organizations that fight for equity and achievement of our underserved populations
