The Brookdale Hospital Medical Center is Hiring a Clinical Director (NP), Hematology/Oncology Near Brooklyn, NY

Overview

The Hematology/Oncology Clinical Director will work independently and collaboratively with Hematology/Oncology physicians, clinic staff, research team, infusion center (AITU) staff and nursing leadership to promote clinical and quality excellence. The Clinical Director has a dual reporting relationship with the Chief of Hematology/Oncology and the Dept of Medicine Chief of Staff (for performance improvement / quality management).The Clinical Director is responsible for infusion center (AITU) oversight and assessment of chemotherapeutic side effects and optimization of clinical parameters in AITU patients. In addition, they will be responsible for establishing and administering continuity of care in the Hematology/Oncology clinic as well as oversight of the treatment authorization process. This position will require management of complex oncology data related to clinical quality outcomes. The director will oversee data collection and will lead ongoing strategic improvement initiatives. The Clinical Director will attend a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board, engaging with all members of our cancer team including Thoracic, GI, GU, Breast, General and Hepatobiliary Surgery as well as Radiation Oncology and members of our support team.

Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Assessing patients in an ambulatory infusion setting, documenting history and physical examinations and assessing patients for chemotherapeutic side effects
  • Formulating differential diagnosis and plan of care based on evidence-based guidelines and current standards of care
  • Assesses the effectiveness of plan of care through documentation of patient care outcomes with ability to modify and adjust treatment care plan as necessary for optimal patient safety, efficacy, and tolerability
  • Works collaboratively with nursing and other disciplines to educate patients and family and provide standard written education materials
  • Evaluates treatment and care plans for effectiveness and modifies per clinical standards and practice protocols.
  • Leads a collaborative effort to streamline all aspects of oncologic care and promotes continuity of care
  • Participates in departmental research and educational activities including weekly Oncology lectures and tumor board
  • Confers with attending physicians, fellows, nurses, and staff to ensure high quality and efficient diagnosis and initiation of care plan and orders, interprets labs and diagnostic tests and triages results when necessary
  • Provides leadership and oversight for direct reports including Oncology coordinator, patient navigator and tumor registrar. Hires, mentors, provides feedback and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Manages collaborative AITU team to oversee operations, scheduling and patient flow within infusion center and hematology/oncology clinic
  • • Oversees prior authorization process for oral chemotherapeutics 

Quality Management Responsibilities:

  • Manages and oversees complex and large data related to clinical quality outcomes. This includes pay for performance, regulatory and improvement data. Provides oversight and expertise in the multiple applications utilized by the department.
  • Utilizes Epic and leverages its capabilities and reporting capacity for meeting and exceeding clinical quality outcomes.
  • Oversees the data collection and reporting of assigned external clinical quality outcomes. Ensures data submissions are accurate and timely.
  • Oversees and conducts sophisticated analyses of opportunities identified in data platforms and draws on additional data sets and information to develop comprehensive assessments.
  • Leads ongoing strategic improvement initiatives related to clinical quality outcomes including pay for performance measures.
  • Identifies improvement opportunities through data analysis, including root cause analysis.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to the development and implementation of clinical quality dashboards in Epic. Ensures that data is timely, accurate and meaningful for the end user.
  • Prepares and presents meaningful reports and analysis of data on progress towards achieving strategic results in clinical quality outcomes. Reports to senior leadership, medical staff leadership and Board Quality Committee.
  • Maintains ongoing knowledge of changes in the regulatory environment related to clinical quality outcomes.
  • Keeps current through ongoing research and education.
  • Ensures staff maintain current knowledge and skills necessary to meet job requirements.
  • Provides regular updates to leadership of changes.
  • Oversees data, benchmarking and reporting for other organizational results submitted to outside sources including the cancer registry.
  • Supervises and guides clinical and data analytics staff to ensure data integrity, efficiency and relevance.
  • As a member of the QI team, participates in Business Transformation Team meetings.
  • Deeply learns and applies Lean tools, thinking and management in their daily routine to create a culture of safety, problem solving and high reliability.

All other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, required.

Other Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) years of Oncology NP experience, preferred.
  • Experience leading improvement initiatives in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Working knowledge of accreditation process and standards for the American College of Surgeon’s (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) and National Accreditation for Breast Cancer (NAPB).
  • Lean, Six Sigma and/or CPHQ certification desired but not required.
  • Solid technical skills using the electronic medical record, preferably in an Epic environment including clinical chart review, coding, reporting and analytics.
  • Demonstrated skills in data analysis and reporting that lead to the identification of trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Performance improvement skills including root cause analysis and model for improvement.
  • Advanced skills in Excel and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills in leading and guiding change. Excellent listening skills necessary to understand the needs of key stakeholders and the data needed to improve outcomes.
  • Strong project management and change management skills.
  • Excellent skill in oral and written communication including demonstrated facilitation skills with diverse groups.
  • Skill in managing multiple priorities and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines under all types of circumstances. Strong management and supervision skills necessary to engage and lead a team to achieve organizational and departmental goals.
  • Strong public speaking skills with ability to present complex data and information in a meaningful manner.

Licensure, Certifications:

  • Current registration as Professional Nurse in New York State and Registration as Nurse Practitioner in New York State
  • Board Certification as an Adult or Family NP, required
  • BLS certification, required
  • DEA certificate, required
  • ALS, PALS, NALS, NRP certificates as needed by specialty

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
