Interns spend approximately 12 weeks working alongside leading experts in government and academia from all over the world. Brookings also offers students the opportunity to intern in departments such as communications, human resources and central operations management. The mission of the Internship Program is to provide students with a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to their field of study?or career interest. Students engage in career exploration and development as well as learn new skills.

Interns will have the opportunity to attend virtual meetings, think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events.??In addition, interns will have the opportunity to network with other interns throughout the Institution.

This internship is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year and graduate students with an interest in European affairs and transatlantic relations to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment. This internship pays an hourly rate of $17.50, and applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule.

Position Location : This position is open to hybrid and/or remote applicants. Hybrid work combines regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC, office with the option of remote work . Remote work applicants may not work from the following states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington.?

Responsibilities:

Learning Objectives

The internship will focus on a broad range of issues, including the U.S. elections and potential ramifications for U.S. foreign policy, trans-Atlantic relations, and European security; European politics and foreign, security, and trade policy under the new European Union leadership and national governments; and Russia, its war against Ukraine, and U.S. and European policies towards the conflict.

Interns will acquire substantive professional experience while working with the staff and scholars in the Center on the United States and Europe (CUSE) at Brookings to assist with programmatic and administrative work, event coordination, and research support. Interns will hone organizational, analytical, and professional interpersonal skills assisting CUSE in its mission to foster high-level U.S.-European dialogue on the challenges and policies in Europe, the United States, and the world that influence trans-Atlantic relations.

Interns will gain first-hand experience in public policy and international affairs by assisting in the logistical planning and implementation of conferences, roundtables, briefings, and other meetings; researching issues relevant to CUSEs work; monitoring current developments in relevant research areas; proofreading, fact-checking, and editing research materials; collecting, reviewing, summarizing, and assembling relevant literature materials from a wide variety of sources; compiling and updating mailing, media, and invitation lists; attending foreign policy events; briefing CUSE staff members; and providing general administrative support.

Qualifications:

Education/Knowledge/Skills:

Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year and graduate students with an interest in European affairs and transatlantic relations are encouraged to apply. Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: European affairs, the European Union, transatlantic relations, Russia, and European security issues. English fluency is required; proficiency in additional language(s) is also desired. Superior writing and editing abilities, strong organizational and analytical skills, interpersonal acumen, and acute attention to detail are essential.

This internship requires you to be located in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.

Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
