The Cedars is Hiring a Grounds and Maintenance Near McPherson, KS

Hours: Monday - Friday 7:30AM- 4:00pm Full Time 40 hours per week

Responsible for On Call every 7-8 weeks.

Reports to: Director of Environmental Services and/or Maintenance Supervisor and receives direction from the Grounds Lead role

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver’s license and clear MVR.
  • Familiarity with sprinkler systems and other landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of gardening techniques.
  • Knowledge of gardening products such as fertilizers and pesticides.
  • 24-hour availability for emergencies and as part of an on-call rotation.
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle staff, residents, and visitors based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.
  • Must be able and willing to work harmoniously with residents, staff, community and vendors.

Summary/Objective
The Groundskeeper is responsible for performing general grounds maintenance of the campus facilities at The Cedars, Inc. with delivering premier care to all the stakeholders involved. The Groundskeeper will provide daily ground care in accordance with the timeline and schedule set forth by the Environmental Services team leaders.

This individual must possess high levels of attention to detail and interpersonal skills (soft skills i.e., compassion, empathy, coachability, ability to accept constructive criticism) to be effective in this role. This individual must possess the qualities of The Ideal Team Player to be considered for this role (see end of job description for further details).

GROUNDSKEEPER
-Performs general grounds maintenance for the facility. Responsible for mowing, edging lawn, trimming/pruning bushes, planting flowers, trees and shrubs. Waters lawn and shrubs. Ensures walkways/parking lots are clear and safe during inclement weather.

  • Have working knowledge of tools and their proper use.
  • Must be safety conscious and aware of surroundings.
  • You may be asked to do the following, depending on the situation as it arises:
  • Mowing lawns
  • Trimming hedges
  • Watering plants
  • Installing sprinkler and irrigation systems
  • Preparing outdoor areas for various weather conditions by weatherproofing, covering outdoor furniture with tarps, tying down unsecured items, etc.
  • Maintaining gardens and lawns, including planting, fertilizing, weeding, soil conditioning, mulching, and applying pesticides
  • Operating and maintaining garden and landscaping equipment
  • Scheduling specialty services such as ground leveling or patio installation
  • Ordering supplies and equipment
  • Cleans grounds and removes litter
  • Spread salt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup in areas applicable.
  • Responsible for the care, maintenance and inventory of all supplies and equipment owned by the property and/or the management company
  • Responsible for reporting unusual or extraordinary circumstances regarding the property or residents
  • Complete all administrative requirements and forms accurately and in accordance with established property deadlines (i.e. timeclock, logs, checklists, etc.).
  • Maintain and utilize tools, equipment, and vehicles in a clean, orderly, and safe manner.
  • Follow established procedures for accessing and returning tools and other materials from the maintenance shop.
  • Participate in safety inspections and alert Maintenance Supervisor or Director of Environmental Services/Supervisor of any safety hazards immediately. Comply with all safety policies including utilizing required safety equipment (i.e. back belt, safety glasses, etc.).
  • Comply with policies and procedures laid out in the property Operations and Maintenance plan manuals kept on-site.
  • Participate in and meet deadlines for all mandatory training programs.
  • Work well with people including staff, residents, families, and outside community.
  • Must be personable and friendly.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Coordinates with other departments.
  • Must be able to pay attention to details while performing multiple tasks simultaneously for periods of 2 hours or longer.
  • Must show up to work regularly without excessive absences.
  • Must have fluency in English for effective job performance. Must be able to speak clearly, distinctly and be understood by co-workers and customers. Bi-lingual is a plus but not necessary.
  • Handwriting must be legible and in standard specified format for general understanding by others.
  • Writing skills must include the ability to spell correctly and use proper grammar and punctuation. This includes both e-mail and formal letters.
  • Must be able to learn procedures within The Cedars established timeline and follow them accurately and consistently according to organizational standards.
  • Must be able to learn new duties and procedures and implement them into work habits within The Cedars specified timelines.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills with internal and external customers.
  • Must be able to hear and understand resident and staff requests.
  • Must be able to read accurately and retain information that was read and apply it.
  • Must be able to lift, pull and carry up to 50 pounds individually and up to 200 pounds with assistance devices (i.e., hand trucks, dollies, additional persons, etc.) by applying proper body mechanics.
  • Specific vision abilities are required for this job which include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods (4 hours or more).
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand; walk; use hands to finger, touch or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Bending and stooping is a frequent occurrence.

Primary Duties
This is what you will be expected to do daily in this role.

  • Respond to emergency situations in accordance with departmental protocol.
  • Assist with controlling expenses associated with the upkeep of the campus grounds.
  • Communicate effectively to appropriate to the Grounds Lead regarding grounds related deficiencies.
  • Adhere to all safety standards, policies, and procedures, building codes, codes of conduct and industry best practices.
  • Perform tasks in an orderly and timely manner.
  • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize.

Work Environment
This job operates in a nursing home/healthcare setting. Because residents need round-the-clock care, coordinating with residents and resident’s families may require working hours that include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. You may be expected to report on Campus with limited notice.

The role routinely will be expected to work in an outdoor environment and is exposed to adverse weather conditions. There may be periods of personal exposure to extreme heat and cold in this role for significant periods of time.

The noise level in the work environment may be very high due to the constant operation of machinery and equipment.

On-Call/Phone
The Groundskeeper will be expected to carry on their person, a mobile device to be reachable by leadership as per the on-call policy for Environmental Services. When taking assigned call, the employee will be compensated according to our organizational policies.

Travel
Limited travel back and forth to and from across the Cedars campus and occasionally off campus to obtain supplies and materials for required jobs. Occasional travel to work seminars or required learning experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL MAINTENANCE Department

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Able and willing to operate equipment necessary to perform required tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA standards.
  • Must be able to work harmoniously with staff, have patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever level at which they are currently functioning.
  • Reside within 20 miles of The Cedars Campus to be able to take maintenance on Call every 7-8 weeks for the maintenance department.
  • Valid Driver's license.
