IntroductionThe Center for Black Health & Equity (The Center) is the leading nationally recognized public health entity for solutions impacting African American health. We engage healthcare organizations, public health officials, faith leaders, and African-American communities in health promotion and disease prevention work. We apply our proven policy and social change framework to our work in tobacco control, COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, women's health, cancer, mental health, and other disparities.

Position SummaryThe Center’s Cancer Program Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the planning, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive cancer prevention and control programs following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. This role is crucial in strategizing and managing initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of cancer, enhancing access to care and treatment, fostering education in the community, and working closely with community and government agencies. The Cancer Program Manager manages the organization's programs, ensuring they are effectively designed, implemented, and aligned with the nonprofit's mission and goals. They play a key role in driving the success of the nonprofit's initiatives and maximizing their impact on the community. The Cancer Program Manager performs complex program management activities and supports the strategic operations and plans for their respective program hosted by The Center. The Cancer Program Manager reports to the Senior Program Manager(s).
Essential Functions
  • To serve as an expert resource on the cancer program area impacting African-American communities.
  • Collaborate with comprehensive cancer control programs in various states.
  • Develop and implement program strategies that align with The Center’s mission and objectives.
  • Develops and facilitates workshops, meetings, or conferences; coordinates logistics, scheduling, and participant communications.
  • Participate in in-person or video conference meetings, conference calls, webinars, and training as required by funding agencies.
  • Prepares and leads training programs on best practices to reduce health disparities in cancer treatment and care.
  • Provides technical assistance as requested by network participants or state or local public health departments.
  • Create detailed program plans to guide teams, including timelines, goals, budgets, and performance metrics, to guide, motivate, and support objectives.
  • Develop and recommend new or revise existing program goals and objectives, and schedule program work plans following specifications and within funding limitations, monitoring and approving staff and subcontractor expenditures to ensure budget allocations are not exceeded.
  • Monitor program progress, track key performance indicators, and assess effectiveness through evaluation.
  • Prepares and submits all programmatic reports (internal and external) in a timely manner.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks to the program and provide regular updates to leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements related to program operations.
  • Ensure policies and positions aligning with The Center’s mission and vision are shared with appropriate parties.
  • Confers with and advises staff, regional network members, and others to provide technical advice, problem-solving assistance, answers to questions and program goals and policy interpretation, and referring customers to the appropriate staff member when unable to respond.
  • Collaborate with the grants and contracts team to secure funding for programs through grant applications and donor relationships, monitoring, reviewing, and assisting with the preparation of proposals for funding and funding continuation.
  • Interacts and maintains liaison with regional members including state programs, faculty, and community-based agencies in facilitating program objectives.
  • Cultivate partnerships with external organizations, national networks, coalitions, stakeholders, and community members to enhance program impact.
  • Provide capacity-building training and technical assistance to coalitions, cancer programs, and local and state community-based programs.
  • Participate in the development and facilitation of comprehensive mass-reach communication interventions with coalitions and communities.
  • Prepare and deliver reports and evaluation data on program outcomes, impact, and financial status.
  • Facilitate communication between program teams, staff members, and volunteers.
  • Oversees daily operations, coordinates program activities, and determines priorities.
  • Stay informed about trends, best practices, and developments in the nonprofit sector and relevant program areas.
  • Perform related duties as assigned, within the scope of practice for this position.

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employees encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Physical Demands Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects including equipment necessary to perform job functions. Repetitive motion, and substantial movements or motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Travel RequirementsTravel requirements at The Center include but are not limited to at least two all-staff meetings per year at our headquarters or field office in Durham, North Carolina, or Cleveland, Ohio. Reimbursement for travel expenses. The Senior Program Manager position is expected to travel up to 25% at a minimum depending on the policy work performed.
Required Education And Experience
  • A Master's degree in Public Health, Social Services, related field, or relevant experience is required.
  • Three to five years of experience in program management or a related role within the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong understanding of cancer treatment and care control strategies, public health campaigns, and advocacy efforts.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple programs.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Experience in grant writing, fundraising, and donor relations within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to collaborate with community members, organizations, and government agencies.
  • Passion for promoting public health and cancer control.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of public health administrative strategy, procedures, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing proven strategies to address health disparities.
  • Experience working with the public, vulnerable populations, and community-based organizations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and proficiency with Google Suite of Applications.
