Position Summary

A Recovery Support Specialist is a member of the SSTRY team who seeks to develop a trusting, mentor-like connection with youth and families in the community with substance use needs. The Recovery Support Specialist will work directly with youth and families in their communities to enhance their motivation to change, sustain goals made in substance use treatment and/or to connect them to needed services and supports, including case management through the SSTRY model. The Recovery Support Specialist is a resource to youth and families and can be called at any time to illicit support. They will also get to know specific communities and providers in the greater New Haven region so they can be viewed as a resource to individuals in need. The Recovery Support Specialist will be directly accountable to the SSTRY Program Manager.

Hours

Monday - Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (37.5 hours) - Will be able to maintain a flexible schedule, which includes travel between locations (Hamden, Middletown, Meriden, and Norwich).

Education:

At least 2 years of professional experience in the field of behavioral health for adolescents and/or transitional age youth and case management activities. BA/BS in Human services or related field preferred.

Previous Experience and/or Training:

Knowledge and experience working with adolescents. Bilingual in English/Spanish, preferred.

Skills:

Knowledge of problems and needs of youth with substance use, recovery and behavioral health issues and ability to motivate young people to change. Strong ability to engage youth through a strengths-based approach while communicating respect to the client population. Ability to supervise groups of young people while enforcing rules. Ability to work as a team. Mature judgement in dealing with behavioral problems to avoid power struggles. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
