The Chronicle of Philanthropy is Hiring a Remote Reporter, Fundraising

The Chronicle of Philanthropy, the premier source of news, analysis, and professional development for the rapidly growing nonprofit sector, has embarked on an exciting and monumental new chapter. After becoming an independent nonprofit in 2023, the Chronicle is innovating and expanding as it shines a spotlight on one of the most under-covered but crucial areas of American life.

We are committed to influencing how individuals get engaged in the nonprofit sector and how nonprofits and foundations can do more to advance meaningful change. We also offer a robust set of services that enable professionals to advance their skills and careers.

Job Summary:

Fundraising is one of our most critical coverage areas. Virtually all nonprofits — from the largest colleges to the smallest food banks — pursue their mission with support they raise from private sources, including individuals, foundations, and corporations. That support is the lifeblood of the $6 trillion nonprofit industry, and it can come in the form of a billionaire’s million-dollar grant or the gifts of $5 and $10 from everyday Americans.

As a reporter on the fundraising beat, your stories will focus on fundraising advice. You will identify fundraising trends, talk to fundraisers, and learn what's working and potential pitfalls. The goal is to write articles with actionable steps fundraisers can take to better do their jobs. You will collaborate with our Nonprofit Intelligence team on webinars, live discussions, and case studies – work that helps nonprofit fundraisers improve their skills in attracting donations of all kinds.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate a bench of experts and sources who understand the fundraising world and can help us share innovations as well as effective practices.
  • Execute advice and professional development stories about fundraising for our daily online coverage and our monthly magazine.
  • Contribute to and develop our weekly fundraising email newsletter.
  • Develop articles with lively or visual storytelling formats (e.g. lists, charts, quick-hit "takeaway" pieces).
  • Work on annual projects, including "Trends 2025" and a deep analysis of the annual Giving USA report, to understand what the research tells us, what experts recommend, and how fundraising efforts are changing.
  • Collaborate with other members of our newsroom on data and survey projects.
  • Partner with our Nonprofit Intelligence team on seeding ideas for webinars, live discussions, case studies, and other pieces for our online resource center. Several times throughout the year you will be tapped to host a webinar.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Three years of experience working at a journalistic organization in a writing and reporting capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to write for a professional audience in a lively, clear, and actionable way. Strong interest in service-oriented journalism.
  • Outstanding reporting skills.
  • Strong news judgment.
  • Ability to create digital content in collaboration with our newsroom and visuals team, including a willingness to experiment with new formats that engage readers.
  • Deadline driven, ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate.
  • Enthusiasm to amplify stories through social media, email newsletters, and other channels.
  • Experience covering or working in a nonprofit environment is a bonus, but not required.
  • A passion for nonprofit journalism and a strong understanding of our mission.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Salary and Benefits:

The expected salary range for this position is $75,000 – $85,000 annually

  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy offers a generous benefits package including:
  • 24 vacation days and 16 paid holidays annually, including the entire last week of December
  • Up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave, 16 weeks of paid medical leave, and 2 weeks of paid family leave
  • 401k retirement plan with 3% automatic monthly contributions and 3% additional matching contributions
  • Health insurance through CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield BlueChoiceAdvantage Platinum plan, including $0 in-network deductible and $10 copay per visit
  • Comprehensive vision, dental, disability and life insurance
  • Health Care FSA, Dependent Care FSA, public transit, and parking pre-tax contribution programs

Application Process:

Please submit your resume, cover letter, and three samples of your work (.doc or .pdf files)
