Job Purpose and Objectives:
Performs manual labor in maintaining the plant life and performing ground maintenance at the City of Emporia’s parks and zoo.
Job Competencies: Essential Functions include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.
- Assists in the maintenance and repair of mowers, equipment and buildings
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems
- Plants trees, annuals, perennials and shrubs following guidelines and drawings
- Applies fertilizers and pesticides
- Prunes, wraps, stakes and removes trees
- Waters plants and trees
- Spreads lawn seed arid cover
- Mows and edges grass areas and removes trees
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools
- Cleans restrooms in the park and zoo area
- Removes snow and ice in the winter
- Maintains playground equipment
- Installs holiday lights
- Assists in construction and maintenance projects
- Assists Zoo personnel in capture and care of animals
- Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
- Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
- Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
- Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed
- Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic

Position Requirements:
1. High school diploma or other equivalent
Certifications / Licenses:
1. Valid KS Driver’s License
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
1. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
2. Ability to operate mowers, power tools and hand tools
3. Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
4. Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently
5. Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner
6. Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment
7. Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously
8. Strong written and verbal communication skills

Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $14.20 - $15.68 per hour
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
