The City of Emporia is Hiring a Traffic Safety Tech Near Emporia, KS

Job Purpose and Objectives:

The Traffic Safety Tech maintains and repairs street signs, traffic lights, and pavement markings in accordance with standards and regulations. The employee must be familiar with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the requirements of the placement of street signs.

Job Competencies: Essential Functions include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

1. Makes repairs to damaged signs

2. Cuts limbs and obstructions from signs

3. Operates a loader, boom truck, flusher, and dump truck

4. Sets up barricades

5. Changes traffic lights

6. Makes new signs and installs posts

7. Surveys and stakes jobs and calls for locates

8. Utilizes and updates GPS and GIS mapping

9. Locates buried city utilities

10. Maintains signs department in clean, orderly condition

11. Maintains equipment in running order

12. Attends safety meetings and seminars

13. Assists with installing Christmas decorations

14. Takes traffic counts as requested

15. Repairs and replaces broken traffic signal units

16. Washes and maintains all city street signs

17. Turns on and off school flashing lights

18. Assists with portable signs

19. Maintains railroad crossing barricades

20. Maintains records of all work performed

21. Maintains inventory and compares prices on needed items

22. Tapes and paints school crossings, railroad crossings, parking lots, etc.

23. Mows and weed eats facility

  • Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
  • Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
  • Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
  • Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed
  • Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic

Position Requirements and Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Position Requirements:

1. High school diploma or other equivalent required

Certifications / Licenses:

1. Valid Kansas driver's license. CDL license preferred

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

1. General knowledge of street sign maintenance and repair

2. Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and procedures in work assignments

3. Ability to receive and follow oral and written instructions

4. Ability to read and interpret MUCTD and follow necessary protocols and procedures

5. Ability to operate heavy equipment/vehicles, including dump trucks, loaders, boom trucks, flushers, augers, jack hammers, and post hole diggers

6. Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work

7. Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently

8. Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner

9. Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment

10. Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously

11. Strong written and verbal communication skills

12. Problem solving and critical thinking skills

13. Strong math, spelling, computer, and calculator abilities

14. Ability to communicate in a professional, calm, and courteous manner with general public and employees

15. Attention to detail

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.80 - $20.64 per hour
