The City of Emporia is Hiring a Zoo Maintenance Worker Near Emporia, KS

Under the supervision of the Zoo Director, the Zoo Maintenance Worker is a non‑exempt part time position. The employee in this position performs manual labor tasks in the care and feeding of zoo animals.

Examples of Work (Essential Functions)

$ Measures quantities of feed and feeds and waters animals;

$ Washes and cleans pens and cages;

$ Cleans water ponds;

$ Observes animals for sickness or injury;

$ Purchases food for animals;

$ Maintains zoo exhibits, habitats, fences, cages, paths and walks;

$ Catches animals for treatment or when escaped;

$ Collects and candles eggs;

$ Assists with euthanization of animals;

$ Performs rodent control;

$ Removes snow in winter;

$ Assists the public with questions and inquiries;

$ Transports animals to other facilities and vet;

$ Closes zoo and checks all areas;

$ Plants grasses, trees, shrubs and flowers;

Zoo Maintenance Worker Requirements

Experience: This is an entry level position and prior experience is not required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well six months in the position.

Education: High school diploma or GED preferred. Requires a valid driver's license.

Skills: The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. The ability to operate a tractor, mowers, catch nets and poles and hand tools.

Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Duties follow established policies and procedures.

Decision Making: Limited decision making exists in this position. Decisions are made based upon established policies and procedures.

Financial Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.

Supervision: Supervision is provided and decisions are always reviewed by the zookeeper foreman. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.

Interpersonal Relations: Occasional contact with other city departments and frequent contact with the general public.

Working Conditions: Adverse weather conditions, working around large and small wild animals are factors in this position.

Physical Requirements: Heavy manual labor is required. The ability to walk over rough terrain, climb, crawl, bend, pull, lift and stoop are required. The ability to catch, move, lift and carry large animals.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $13.90 - $16.11 per hour
