THE CLASSICAL ACADEMY
POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Head Custodian Department: Operations

Date: Updated 5/23/2022 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Year: 260 Day Calendar Year

Hours: 8 AM to 4 PM with occasional weekend or evening hours as needed

Salary: $20.20/hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Head Custodian ensures that the maintenance and cleaning of their school is accomplished safely and consistently in accordance with established performance standards. The Head Custodian coordinates the performance and monitors the quality of all custodial activities at their campus.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Facilities Director

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Processes and assigns internal work orders submitted by faculty and staff
  • Manages service vendors
  • Ensures the buildings are opened at appropriate times (including two-hour snow delays)
  • Coordinates and performs snow removal activities as needed and in preparation for the next day if school is cancelled or delayed due to snow. Snow removal activities include the following:
  • Shoveling, plowing & spreading ice melt
  • Assists in the selection, assignment, scheduling, and training of custodians
  • Maintains inventory and purchases supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Assists with organizing, scheduling, coordinating, and overseeing various maintenance programs
  • Tracks, coordinates, and assists in preparation for school functions
  • Plans and performs minor maintenance repairs to the facilities and systems and reports major discrepancies
  • May be required to carry and respond to a mobile communication device for the purpose of conducting school related business both during and after normal business hours

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Communicates with contracted custodial vendor, verifying quality of work and reporting discrepancies to the Facilities Director when appropriate
  • Prepares work orders and reports/solves maintenance problems before they become emergencies
  • Plans and schedules maintenance and custodial services during the various breaks and snow days/late starts
  • Reviews and develops cleaning standards and methods
  • Maintains records and reports on inventory, equipment, and the status of current projects
  • Coordinates and assists in the cleaning of classrooms
  • Checks and replaces ceiling tiles and light bulbs as needed
  • Coordinates and assists in keeping building and grounds neat, clean, and clear of snow
  • Coordinates and assists in moving, relocating, and transporting materials, furniture, and equipment to and from storage
  • Reports damage of school property and performs repairs as needed
  • Oversees and helps with set-up/tear-down of facilities and equipment used for school events
  • Monitors hallways and lunchroom to identify cleaning needs or hazards and deters behavioral problems
  • Maintains clean and efficient operating work area
  • Maintains equipment and arranges for service and repairs as necessary
  • Performs other duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in a custodial service position
At least one year of supervisory experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of safe and proper operation and care of custodial and maintenance equipment (cleaning equipment, machines, etc.)
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and building code standards
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, and procedures relating to schools
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment, supplies, and chemicals
  • Ability to work well in a diverse team
  • Ability to interact appropriately with the student body
  • Ability to use a computer to manage workorders, send/receive emails, and other office tasks
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to instruct and monitor the work of custodial staff
  • Ability to operate buffer and other mechanized cleaning equipment
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and other departments
  • Ability to train others in procedures and the use of the equipment

  • May experience exposure to the elements while performing job duties
  • Required to work normal business hours, with an occasional requirement to be flexible in shifts to meet school needs

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Typical demands require the employee to:
  • lift/carry burdens weighing up to 50 lbs. and push/pull burdens weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Spend equivalent amount of the time sitting, standing, and walking while performing job duties
  • Possess visual and auditory capacity to enable the safe operation of machinery
  • Perform job duties involving climbing, stooping, kneeling/bending, crouching, crawling, twisting, and reaching
  • Work with hands above shoulder height with a weight up to 50 lbs.
