The College of St. Scholastica is Hiring a Campus Safety and Security Officer Near Duluth, MN

Position SummaryReporting to the Assistant Director of Safety and Security, the Campus Safety and Security Officer is tasked with the protection and physical security of employees, students, guests, and assets within the confines of College of St. Scholastica, the St. Scholastica Monastery, and the Benedictine Living Community; the enforcement of community policies; and supporting institutional operational and philosophical goals to reach strategic objectives on a 24/7 basis.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Patrols assigned area on foot, in assigned motor vehicle, or other specialized vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.
  • While on duty, act as first responder to all campus emergencies which may include medical, criminal, infrastructure and weather-related events.
  • Respond to all emergency campus alarms such as Fire, distress, temperature, boiler, etc.
  • Enforce campus policies and procedures as may relate to safety and security concerns.
  • Assist Residence and Student Life with enforcement of housing regulations and Code of Conduct Violations.
  • Watch for trespassers, fire, water leaks, or other circumstances which could lead to loss or damage to property and equipment.
  • Make regular inspection tours of the campus facilities noting unusual occurrences.
  • Observe and report hazardous conditions to Facilities management.
  • Ensure inside and outside lights are turned on/off as required and inform facilities management when any lighting, electrical or mechanical system is malfunctioning.
  • Direct visitors and assists as necessary.
  • Monitor parking lots, issue parking violation citations and direct traffic and parking as necessary.
  • Provide campus event parking lot closures and lot access monitoring.
  • Enforce campus traffic regulations including parking, and speeding.
  • Enforce campus policies including smoking, alcohol usage, and drug usage.
  • Observe weather conditions on campus and report dangerous or unusual weather-related activity to management.
  • Complete investigations of college violations, including viewing camera footage, talking with witnesses, and writing incident reports.
  • Act as a liaison for the College with local law enforcement.
  • Provide awareness education/information on an informal basis to students and employees during other duties.
  • In an emergency, may be required to perform incidental custodial and maintenance duties as required.
  • Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; open and close buildings; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, and routine information.
  • Investigate traffic accidents within the boundaries of campus and prepare accident reports.
  • Watch for and report irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contact emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.
  • While on patrol, performs periodic safety checks of emergency call boxes, streetlights, fire extinguishers, etc., to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
  • Prepares routine, standardized reports.
  • Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  • Provide campus event security.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision.

  • Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus.
  • Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Able to walk, stand and respond swiftly.
  • Computer applications including Word and Excel as well and the proprietary computer systems required to manage the tasks included in this job description.
Education And Experience
  • Two years’ experience as a security professional, civilian/military law enforcement officer, or active-duty deployment history or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Required Certificates, Licenses, And RegistrationsContinued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 3 months
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
