The Cushman School is Hiring a High School Social Studies Teacher 2024-2025 Near Miami, FL

High School Teachers are key authority figures and role models for their students. High-school-age students are developing rapidly personally, socially, academically, emotionally, and learning how to negotiate with the world around them. As a result, middle school teachers act not just as educators, but as coaches, advocates and facilitators. What their students learn from them can greatly influence their experiences and successes as students and adults. Excellent communication skills, a love for teaching and adolescents, patience and a compassion for children are necessary to be a good high school teacher.

High school teachers are responsible for educating adolescents according to The Cushman High School Mission and Philosophy. The School’s four endeavors, courtesy, industry, responsibility, and scholarship are the foundation for everything we do at The Cushman School. Their responsibilities include:

Curriculum and Instruction & Assessment:

· Adapt instructional strategies, skills, and materials to meet students' varying needs and interests through differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, Blooms Taxonomy, and Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple intelligences.

· Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments in order to evaluate students' progress frequently to ensure student mastery of learning objectives.

· Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate these objectives to students and parents.

· Use computers, audiovisual aids, curriculum 21 strategies, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.

· Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injury and damage.

· Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.

· Maintain accurate, complete, and correct student records as required by laws, school policies, and administrative regulations.

· Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.

· Prepare lessons, materials and classrooms for class activities in advance. Lesson plans must be submitted to Veracross by the Friday of the week prior to implementation.

· Assign lessons and correct homework.

· Supervise, evaluate, and plan assignments for teacher assistants, subs and volunteers.

· Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of states and schools.

· Prepare and implement remedial programs for students requiring extra help.

· Prepare for assigned classes, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors.

· Provide ELP and mainstream students with assistive devices, supportive technology, modified /accommodated curriculums, projects and assessments.

· Organize and label materials, and display students' work.

· Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration.

· Observe and assess students regularly through multiple means and document through anecdotal records, digital photography, and portfolios.

· Write interim reports and comments four times a year per student.

· Report student progress via report card 4x a year meeting grading deadlines promptly.

· Plan for and participate in student-led conferences a minimum of 2x a year.

Communication & Guidance:

· Confer in a timely manner with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems.

· Communicate to parents regularly through monthly curriculum updates, Veracross, and personal phone calls when needed.

· Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests in your advisory classes and academic classes.

· Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress, and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs.

· Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress.

· Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.

· Solicit parents as partners in the educational experiences in your classroom.

· Maintain open communication with parents and write weekly/monthly curriculum newsletters that are posted in Veracross and e-mailed to parents.

· Establish/maintain positive relationships with students and their parents to maximize student learning.

· Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in dealing with parents.

Extra-Curricular:

· Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from such activities.

· Sponsor extracurricular/enrichment programs, such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.

· Plan to attend extra-curricular middle school programing, such as, middle school socials, service events, trips, field trips, and dances.

Professional Development:

· Psychology –Keep current with adolescent brain development, behavior and performance; and individual differences in ability, personality, and interests.

· Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula.

· Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of middle school programs.

· Attend professional meetings, educational conferences

· Engage in 18 hours of professional development during the summer months

· Participate in the Four Quadrant/P.E.P. Process

Student Management:

· Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible and promote a sense of school spirit and pride.

· Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.

Additional Duties:

· Perform administrative duties such as assisting in middle school chaperoning opportunities, hall monitoring, drop-off and pick-up procedures and bus loading and unloading for trips.

· Administer standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine student strengths and areas of need.

· Attend staff meetings, and serve on staff committees as required, such as, BSC Committee, social committees and the like.

· Arrive to school no later than 7:45a.m. to prepare for the day’s learning experiences and remain on campus until 4pm to offer after school help and complete planning and grading as needed.

· Fulfill morning/lunch/PE changing/afternoon ‘duty’ responsibility until 3:35pm.

· Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, standardized testing materials and supplies.

· Attend monthly whole school faculty meeting on the first Tuesday of each month.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred
