PRIMARY FUNCTION: Director of Engineering

DEPARTMENT: POM

REPORTS TO: Hotel Manager

SUMMARY:

We are searching for an experienced and knowledgeable self-starter to join The Dewberry team as our Director of Engineering. This leader will oversee an engineering team and ensure that the hotel’s building functionality is in smooth operating condition. The Director of Engineering will work hand in hand with the Hotel Manager in maintaining the property to ensure brand standards are met, allowing our operations team to service our guests to a 5-star level.

An ideal candidate for this position has extensive experience in physical operation or hotels including guestrooms, building structures, fixtures, refrigeration, heating, ventilation / HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical systems & grounds. He or she should be able to think on their feet and have a can-do attitude.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Major areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct daily property walks to assess the safety of the property, physical structure of the hotel, all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems and any other related equipment.
  • Perform routine quality control checks on all systems and products.
  • Identify items requiring engineering, housekeeping, and other departmental actions.
  • Take the lead in the hotel’s preventative maintenance plan to ensure that all Dewberry standards are met.
  • Ensure that all projects, routine maintenance, repairs, and replacement projects are completed within a timely manner and in keeping with budgetary restraints while also remaining in accordance with all applicable building codes.
  • Obtain cost-effective proposals for maintaining and/or repairing all systems throughout the hotel.
  • Perform guest response work orders as necessary.
  • Ensure the fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations, horn/strobe assemblies, exit signs/emergency lights, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems are inspected, tested, and certified.
  • Maintain and delegate work orders, utilizing the hotel’s electronic system, ALICE.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area at all times.
  • Maintain proper use, cleaning, maintenance, and storage of all tools.
  • Handle chemicals for designated uses/surfaces in accordance with Safety Data Sheets.
  • Ensure the immaculate maintenance of property grounds.
  • Maintain inventory by properly monitoring and recording inventory items.
  • Train, coach and counsel, and conduct performance evaluations for all Engineering teammates.
  • Report any major issues to the Hotel Manager and recommend solutions.
  • Engage in flexible work schedules to perform well during emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Four years of related management experience within a hotel or similar establishment required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
  • Strong understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and other systems.
  • Strong knowledge of maintenance processes and methods.
  • Working knowledge of tools, common appliances, and machinery.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Able to meet and perform physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position.
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling.
  • Frequent repetitive motions.
  • Continuous standing and walking.
