The Door - A Center of Alternatives is Hiring an Intake and Outreach Specialist - Runaway Homeless Youth Near Bronx, NY

The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals - all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.


Responsibilities:

  • Actively collaborate with providers across the RHY continuum to identify youth who would benefit from The Door’s drop-in services.
  • Collaborate with other departments internally to facilitate referrals for youth to appropriate services.
  • Provide presentations internally and externally on issues relevant to RHY populations.
  • Create systems for tracking youth, service providers, crisis schedule, and routing.
  • Welcome participants to the drop-in program and provide consistent coverage for the front desk in the drop-in center, ensuring members are connected to appropriate crisis and case management services in a timely manner.
  • Assist with food, clothing, showers, and laundry services to participants.
  • Supervise door members while in the drop-in space.
  • Take monthly inventory of all food, clothing, and hygiene supplies and place orders as appropriate.
  • Manage petty cash, Metro Cards, and invoicing for the program.
  • Oversee clothing closet volunteers and drop-in interns.
  • Screen and intake youth for drop-in services and route to appropriate RHY staff.
  • Assist with office duties, i.e., typing, filing, and copying when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people.
  • Ability to establish good rapport with young people and staff.
  • At least 2 years office experience and/or customer service experience required.
  • Previous experience working with homeless or otherwise vulnerable youth populations preferred.
  • Previous experience with computer data entry and database management strongly preferred.
  • Must be self-sufficient and a team player.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Persons who have previously experienced homelessness encouraged to apply.


Work Schedule:
Full time, Monday - Sunday, 7:00 am - 3:00 pm or 3:00 pm -11:00 pm or 11:00 pm - 7:00 am, 35 hours a week


Salary:
Commensurate with experience, plus a generous benefits package
