We are currently looking to fill the position of Apprentice Lineman based at our Utica, OH Service Center. This is a full-time, non-exempt position that serves as an apprentice to a lineman.

An individual in this position will complete the Ohio Electric Cooperative COLT Power Lineworker Certification Program apprentice program.

The program typically takes between 4 to 5 years to complete based on scheduling. The program consists of 8,000 on-the-job training hours in addition to twelve weeks, 600 hours of related technical instructional training at an off-site facility.

Nature and Scope of Position (Essential Duties and Responsibilities) :

• Support and incorporate the Cooperative’s Mission, Vision and Values in professional behavior and decisions.
• Comply with all Cooperative policies, procedures, goals and objectives and meet attendance and punctuality guidelines.
• Understand, observe and enforce cooperative safety and security procedures and report potentially unsafe conditions to department supervisor and / or safety department personnel.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws.
• Successful completion of the Ohio Electric Cooperative COLT Power Lineworker Certification Program apprentice program. The program typically takes between 4 to 5 years to complete based on scheduling.

The program consists of 8,000 on-the-job training hours in addition to twelve weeks, 600 hours of related technical instructional training at an off-site facility.

During the twelve-week off-site program an individual will learn and perform job tasks in the areas associated with the following :

• Safety in all aspects of the job.
• Climbing wood poles, fall protection, pole inspection, basic climbing qualifications, pole top and bucket rescue.
• Work zone safety, work zone set-up, job briefing, work safe practices, groundman training, safe operation of bucket trucks, safe operation of digger derrick trucks.
• Basic rigging, advanced rigging, introduction of the NESC, personal protective grounding, logging standards, right-of-way and chain saw safety, competent person training.
• Hot sticking procedures, changing out poles, stringing and sagging conductors.
• Introduction to substations and apparatus training including the following : substation operations, capacitors, voltage regulators, reclosers and sectionalizes.
• Underground fault indicators, underground circuit protection, reducing underground outages, underground transformer troubleshooting, change-out and banking, installation of personal grounds single phase and three-phase.
• Transformer banks, poly phase metering, instrument transformers, instrument rated metering and self-contained metering.

Metering connections and meter base checking and documentation.

• Successful completion of on-the-job training will include the following areas. Hours required may vary slightly due to the Cooperative’s needs and requirements, however, a total of 8,000 on-the-job training hours are required.
• Introduction to power linework I and power linework 2, electric power systems overview, powerline safety, overhead powerline construction, distribution transformers and circuits, underground powerline construction, overhead powerline maintenance I, overhead powerline maintenance II, electric utility apparatus and substations, underground powerline maintenance and advanced electric utility apparatus.
• Examples of on-the-job training hours listed above include such essential functions as listed below :
• Install and maintain overhead and underground power lines and the use of varying types of line equipment on different types of construction on both energized or de-energized lines.

Work to make emergency repairs or routine changes.

• Read, follow, and understand switching orders. Lock out Tag out procedures. Operate line switch equipment per instructions.
• Safety in underground related work, proper use of underground stripping tools, specifications for underground electric distribution, URD cable installation, safety, inspection, maintenance, and operation of digging equipment.
• Locate and repair faulted underground lines. This includes making splices, elbow, and potential termination work for both 200 amp and 600-amp equipment.
• Patrol and maintain overhead and underground electric distribution lines. Refuse line and transformer cutouts, replace lines and transformers.

Phase out parallel lines at open points, both overhead and underground

• Install and remove street lights and other related equipment.
• Complete scheduled equipment, tool, truck and trailer inspections and exchanges of rubber gloves and cover-up materials.
• Perform on-call duty assignments including working after regular working hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and company-observed holidays and respond quickly to all outage and emergency situations.
• Perform other related work in addition to other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory.

Experience and Education : High school diploma. A basic understanding of the Cooperative’s electrical system. Proficient mathematical and analytical thinking skills and application required.

Good reading, comprehension and study skills are required. Working knowledge of safety standards and operating procedures, and practical theory in all phases of power line installation and maintenance.

Successful completion of physical skills and aptitude assessments and testing required.

Certificates, Licenses and Training : Must possess and maintain a valid state of Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and good driving record.

Must obtain and maintain a current first-aid and CPR training card. Ability to attend meetings and / or training seminars when requested which may involve overnight stay is required.

• Language and Interpersonal Skills : Ability to read, interpret and communicate documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Other Skills and Abilities : This position requires a person with a positive attitude that will work well with many personality types and understand that we are here to work safely and serve the member.

Must demonstrate initiative and judgment in decision-making and display sufficient job knowledge and skill to successfully complete any necessary physical skill and aptitude testing associated with apprentice program.

Must possess hazard recognition skills related to the job that exist in the form of falls, electrical shock, electrical flash, falling objects and traffic.

Must be familiar with the use of personnel protective clothing and safety equipment. Must possess the adaptability to accept responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity or to perform under stress, when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations;

or in situations in which working speed or sustained attention are critical aspects of the job. This person must be available to attend the twelve weeks, 600 hours of related technical instructional training at an off-site facility based on the availability of the training dates as set by COLT Program.

This training requires travel to the training facility overnight for a week at time.
