THE FAMILY INSTITUTE AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY is Hiring a Human Resource Generalist Near Chicago, IL

Description

The Human Resources Generalist position will interact with employees at all levels, promoting an inclusive culture where every team member is respected, valued, and empowered to succeed. As a member of the Human Resources team, the HR Generalist will play a critical role in providing foundational HR support and assisting with strategic projects to advance the organization's goals. The ideal candidate will have a generalist background with experience and/or exposure in the following areas: onboarding, payroll, leave of absences, employee relations, benefits, pay practices, recruitment, and human capital management systems (HCM).

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

Payroll & Benefits Management  

• Track and prepare bi-weekly changes for payroll, ensuring all personnel transactions are completed in accordance with pay cycles 

• Provides benefits support to employees about TFI’s plan offerings, assists employees with benefits questions, and plays an active role in annual open enrollment process 

• Manages the leave of absence process; implementing and tracking leaves, communicating with employees, continuously documenting the process, and tracking LOAs for payroll 

• Manage credentialing for clinical employees 

• Assists with quarterly and monthly contractor payroll

People & Culture 

• Act as the point person for employees who need assistance with any employment related matters 

• Manages the employee off-boarding process; proactively partners with management to ensure an understanding of related requirements and procedures

• Conducts exit interviews and identifies trends to improve retention and the employee experience 

• Provide support for employee engagement activities to foster a culture of inclusiveness (e.g., events, training and development, recognition, etc.) 

HR Operations & Administration

• Responsible for initiating employee changes in HCM system and conducts ongoing audits to ensure accuracy of employee data • Conduct and assess background checks and serve as point of contact for employee eligibility verifications 

• Assists Human Resources team with implementing strategic initiatives, operational procedures, and policies 

• Maintain the standard operating procedure log; notify HR team of changes to processes that require revisions to SOPs

• Supports and suggests improvements to HR practices to improve engagement, morale and productivity 

Policy & Compliance

• Manage and maintain all employee files in compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommend best practices (e.g., I-9, FMLA, etc.) 

• Partners with Human Resources team to communicate policies, procedures, laws, standards and government regulations. Provides policy guidance and interpretation. 

Employee Relations 

• Work with HR Director to manage and resolve routine employee relations issues. 

• Attend and participate in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations. 

Requirements

 SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge and Skills: 

1. Strong organizational skills are required to meet recurring deadlines and maintain tracking systems related to human resource and recruiting information 

2. Excellent customer service skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and attention to detail 

3. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive HR information with discretion 

4. Passionate and knowledgeable about diversity, equity, and inclusion and how to apply those principles to operations strategy and program initiatives 

5. Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, SharePoint) 

Minimum Hiring Specifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, preferred 

2. 3 years' of experience working in Human Resources 

3. Experience working with Paylocity or other HCM system 

4. Working knowledge of employment and benefits law and government regulations 

5. PHR or SHRM CP designation preferred

Physical and Mental Requirements:

1. Ability to clearly and effectively compose written reports 

2. Limited mobility due to constant attention to computer screen

3. Ability to hear (perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels) and express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word

4. Work requires ability to see adequately to perform work-related duties 

5. Ability to comprehend complex ideas 

6. Ability to develop solutions to problems
