Position Overview:

Are you passionate about making a difference in the life of a child with special needs? The Family YMCA is seeking a dedicated and compassionate One-on-One Counselor to provide individualized support to a special needs child in our after-school program. In this role, you will create a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment that promotes the child's development and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

Individualized Support:

• Provide direct, one-on-one supervision and support to a child with special needs during after-school activities.
• Develop and implement tailored strategies to meet the child's unique needs and goals.
• Assist the child with daily routines, transitions, and participation in activities.

Program Participation:

• Facilitate the child's inclusion in group activities, ensuring they are engaged and actively participating.
• Adapt activities and materials to accommodate the child's needs and abilities.
• Encourage social interaction and development of peer relationships.

Behavior Management:

• Implement positive behavior support strategies and interventions.
• Monitor and address behavioral issues promptly and constructively.
• Collaborate with program staff to maintain a consistent approach to behavior management.

Communication:

• Maintain open and regular communication with the child's parents or guardians regarding progress, challenges, and achievements.
• Collaborate with other staff members to ensure consistent and effective support for the child.
• Provide feedback and insights to the program director regarding the child's needs and progress.

Documentation:

• Maintain accurate records of the child's activities, progress, and any incidents or concerns.
• Prepare reports and documentation as required by the program director or other stakeholders.

Safety and Well-being:

• Ensure the child's safety and well-being at all times.
• Follow all YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to child protection and emergency protocols.
• Be vigilant in identifying and addressing potential risks or hazards.

Qualifications:

Must be 18 years of age

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Experience working with children with special needs, preferably in an educational or recreational setting.

Skills and Abilities:

• Strong understanding of the needs and challenges faced by children with special needs.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with children.
• Ability to adapt to the child’s changing needs and environments.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a team and maintain a positive attitude.

Certifications:

• CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hire).
• Additional relevant certifications in special education or behavior management preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to engage in physical activities with the child, including playing, running, and other recreational activities.
• Ability to lift and assist the child as needed.
• Ability to respond quickly in emergencies.
