Responsibilties
  • Leads research and development activities.
  • Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • May provide consultation on complex projects. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Provide planning preclinical research experiments accounting for the impact of hemorrhagic shock and traumatic brain injury.
  • Determine what pathological characteristics are measurable in the acute, subacute, and chronic periods following brain injury.
  • Provide scientific and technical support for the research, development, and efficacy evaluation of neuro-protection/neuro-restoration therapies with the ability to fully characterize head injury models defining the temporal profile of histopathology, neurobehavioral (motor/cognitive) dysfunction, molecular (biomarkers/bioenergetics) and electrophysiological (EEG) changes following a "single" or repetitive injury to the brain such as:
    • Penetrating Ballistic-like Brain Injury (PBBI) Research
    • Projectile Concussive Impact (PCI) Brain Injury Research
    • Polytrauma Neurotherapeutic Resuscitation Research using an Aortic Tourniquet
    • Neural Stem Cell Research
    • TBI Neuroprotection and Neuro-restoration Research
    • Non-convulsive Seizures Research
    • Molecular Mechanisms, Biomarkers Identification and Therapeutic Intervention for TBI Research
  • Conduct and analyze brain trauma neuroprotection, neuro-restoration, and neurotherapeutic research, including therapeutic strategies, blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, immune-inflammatory responses, biomarkers, pathology and sequalae following trauma as well as the molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain injury.
  • Use models to validate and characterize scaled experimental blast exposure conditions and assess outcomes relevant to blast-injured Warfighters to define the biomechanical and neurobiological underpinnings of blast traumatic brain injury (TBI) and establish effective countermeasures.
  • Characterize individual operator blast exposures in a variety of training environments to identify the effects of blast overpressure exposures on cognitive performance, brain and blood biomarkers, and symptom reporting.
  • Conduct all aspects of scientific research experiments according to individual reviewed protocols.
  • Perform research studies to include writing protocols, executing protocols, analyzing data, and writing manuscripts.
  • Communicate and correspond with lead investigator(s) regarding experimental procedures, study progress, concerns about the study, and changes in procedure on a regular and ongoing basis.
  • Perform routine and specialized behavior tests and procedures on animals and humans.
  • Design and coordinate experiments, provide guidance and assistance to research staff and collaborators, and answer questions about experimental objectives and techniques to be used to fulfill these objectives.
  • Recommend equipment acquisitions appropriate for experimental procedures and maintain laboratory inventory of chemical reagents and surgical supplies required for these tasks.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Prepare or contribute to the summary of experimental findings for presentation at laboratory discussions, at scientific meetings, in reports, and in scientific journals.
  • Assist in the preparing and submitting research proposals to funding agencies along with reports and briefings required for funded research.
  • Identify and quantify pathophysiological mediators in biological fluids and tissue extracts as part of an overall effort to recognize biomarkers to non-invasively categorize blast TBI severity and etiology.
  • Evaluate neuroprotective pharmacological therapies using neurobehavioral, histopathological, and neurochemical outcome measures.
  • Assess the cellular basis for blast-induced brain dysfunction and neuronal injury.
  • Routinely review the scientific literature for reports relevant to ongoing research in blast TBI and polytrauma.
  • As needed, develop laboratory techniques, and assays; instruct others to correctly use these procedures, and record them as a laboratory Standing Operating Procedure (SOP).
Requirements
  • Doctorate degree and post-doctoral training in physiology and/or neuroscience.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in physiology and/or neuroscience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in rodent surgery and physiological monitoring techniques related to bTBI.
  • Demonstrated expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to fully characterize head injury models defining the temporal profile of histopathology, neurobehavioral (motor/cognitive) dysfunction, molecular (biomarkers/bioenergetics) and electrophysiological (EEG) changes following a "single" or repetitive injury to the brain such as:
    • Penetrating Ballistic-like Brain Injury (PBBI) Research
