About the Role

In support of the Principal Investigator and/or designee, the Research Veterinarian will provide research/medical support to animals’ part of the research project. Additional duties may include prescribing medications, administer treatment plans and perform surgeries on large and small animals. Provides oversight of animal care and research/laboratory protocol to ensure compliance with veterinary standards. Additional duties will include planning for and handling of animals, assisting with and/or conduct general anesthesia, sterile surgical preparation, endotracheal access, invasive hemodynamic measurements and samples, and routine blood analysis procedures and maintaining a vivarium in accordance with American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards.

Salary

$135,000 - $165,000. Salaries and hourly pay rates are determined based on several factors including external market data, internal equity, and the candidate’s related knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide animal health care in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory animals
  • Provide drug ordering in accordance with study protocols
  • Maintain and follow SOP’s and Occupational Health Guidelines at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR)
  • Assist and support surgical procedures of large and small animals
  • Abide in accordance with state practices and principals of research ethics and veterinary medical ethics
  • Leverage and apply evidence-based practice and pursue quality animal care
  • Maintain relevant research data
  • Communicate veterinary research standards and ethical practices to research laboratory technicians and/or other research veterinarian staff
  • Ability to work in Maryland as primary location with offsite work (e.g. North Carolina) as needed along with PI and team
  • Leading projects as associate investigator
  • Lead or assist with grant writing
  • Maintain and promote The Geneva Foundation’s core values of Integrity, Superior Customer Service, Quality, Teamwork, Innovation, and Respect for All
  • Possess a working knowledge of The Geneva Foundation’s Employee Handbook, User’s Guide, and Standard Operating Practices (SOPs) as applicable
  • Remain accessible and accountable at all times during work hours and collect messages at least twice daily
  • Return telephone messages within one business day of receipt; return email messages in a timely manner as appropriate
  • Comply with the dress code of The Geneva Foundation and assigned duty station
  • Promote positive, professional relationships with co-workers at The Geneva Foundation

Qualifications

  • PhD in Veterinary Medicine, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DMV) and successful completion of North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE)
  • 3-5 years’ experience in biomedical or research laboratory (vivarium) is desired
  • License to practice in North Carolina is a must
  • Experience in planning and handling of animals for surgical techniques of large/small animal experiments
  • Experience in conducting general anesthesia, sterile surgical preparation, endotracheal access, invasive hemodynamic measurements and samples, and routine blood analysis procedures
  • Experience with drug ordering and managing for animal research
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and categorizations
  • Computer skills including at least intermediate level experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
  • Strong data management and processing skills
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and abbreviations
