The George Washington University is Hiring a Director, Interfaith & Spiritual Life Near Washington, DC

The Division for Student Affairs (DSA) engages and encourages student learning by creating and fostering communities that promote personal development. Students are offered opportunities, services, and activities that promote connectedness, diversity, inclusion, health and well-being, and belonging.

The Center for Interfaith and Spiritual Life will foster and support the diverse religious and spiritual needs of the George Washington University community, promoting interfaith dialogue, understanding, and cooperation.

George Washington University seeks a dynamic and innovative leader to serve as the Director of Interfaith and Spiritual Life. This is a unique opportunity to foster a welcoming and inclusive space for students, faculty, and staff on a secular campus to explore their religious and spiritual identities, engage in interfaith dialogue, and navigate ethical challenges. The Director will play a pivotal role in shaping a vibrant and diverse community that respects and celebrates all individual journeys of meaning and purpose.

Reporting to the University Chaplain, the Director of Interfaith and Spiritual Life will:

  • Oversee the Center for Interfaith & Spiritual Life, provide strategic planning and staff management, and liaise between the university and religious communities to promote interfaith dialogue and cooperation.
  • Liaison between the university and religious communities to promote interfaith dialogue and cooperation
  • Provide pastoral care and support to students, faculty, and staff of all faiths and backgrounds.
  • Cultivate relationships with religious and spiritual communities on and off campus, building bridges and fostering collaboration. This includes collaborating with student groups, religious centers, and relevant community organizations.
  • Advocate for the needs and interests of the religious and spiritual community within the university and to external stakeholders. This may involve participation in relevant committees, policy discussions, and public events.
  • Provide educational programming on various religious and spiritual traditions, ethics, and related topics. This may include guest lectures, courses, or collaborative initiatives with academic departments.
  • Supervise student staff and volunteers involved in religious and spiritual life programs.
  • Stay current on trends and best practices in campus religions and spiritual life.
  • Contribute to the overall mission and values of George Washington University by fostering a spirit of inclusivity, understanding, and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with individuals of all backgrounds.
  • Experience in program development, event planning, and budget management is desired.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to the mission and values of a secular university, including a respect for the diverse beliefs and non-beliefs of the campus community.
  • Experience in working on a secular university campus is desired.
  • Familiarity with interfaith dialogue and collaboration is preferred.
  • Public speaking experience desired.
