Technical Writer
We are seeking a Technical Writer who will play a pivotal role in the School of Nursing by utilizing exceptional writing skills to produce high-quality white papers, journal articles, policy papers, and other written materials. This position demands a strong ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and engaging content that resonates with both technical and non-technical audiences.
The primary responsibility of the Technical Writer will be to collaborate closely with the Dean and subject matter experts across the school to gather information and insights, and then distill this information into comprehensive and comprehensible written materials. The successful candidate will possess excellent research skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas in a structured and accessible manner. The individual in this position must be self-motivated, an effective writer and editor, and capable of customizing content for specific audiences who can work on multiple projects concurrently with minimal supervision.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Communicate information of a highly complex nature in a clear, precise, and compelling way.
  • Write analytic, interpretive, or highly individualized features utilizing specialized knowledge in the respective field.
  • Convey technical information in a clear and accessible manner to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proof, standardize, and edit content produced by peers and other writers to ensure they reflect the style and voice of the organization.
  • Creates, updates and maintains templates for various communication types.
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Expert (SMEs) as needed with faculty and staff within the School, the School’s research centers, and the Institute for Policy Solutions.

  • Demonstrated superior writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong research skills with willingness and ability to quickly synthesize complex information in accessible and actionable formats.
  • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner.
  • Knowledge of style manuals, such as Chicago, US Government Publishing Office, and Associated Press.
  • Experience in successful management of multiple concurrent projects to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work in a complex fast-paced and high-profile environment with short deadlines, competing priorities and intense pressure to perform.
  • Experience in working both independently and as part of a team, exercising a high degree of initiative.
  • Experience in successfully working effectively and cooperatively with an ethnically and culturally diverse population.
  • Strong problem-solver; ability to navigate various viewpoints to develop consensus.
  • Ability to be flexible and self-motivated in order to deliver high quality work product in multiple communication mediums.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related Technical/Scientific field.
  • One year writing experience, preferably in technical/scientific field. Writing samples will be required. If degree is in a non-technical/scientific field, two years technical/scientific writing experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $27.33 - $47.94 HRLY ($37,150.68 targeted amount; commensurate with experience)

Total RewardsThe referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience EquivalencyPlease refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
