The Metropolitan Opera is Hiring an Assistant Staff Lighting Designer Near New York, NY

Weekly Salary: $1941.23
The Metropolitan Opera seeks a USA 829 Lighting Designer, or candidate willing to join the union. The Met lighting design office works on the initial design development implementation, and repertory revival of all lighting design aspects of Metropolitan Opera productions. Design development work is continuous year-round, with 4-5 productions at various stages of development simultaneously. Design development work is done parallel to the daily responsibilities of the current opera season which consists of 4-5 New Production technical rehearsal/stage orchestra rehearsals, 21-23 revival productions, 8-10 HD Live in HD transmissions as well as various concerts, galas and special events.
Primary Responsibilities
    • Assist Resident Lighting Designer and Associate Lighting Designer as assigned during daily stage/studio operations
    • Assist with creation and maintenance of lighting design paperwork
    • Work with other production/technical staff to solve lighting and other production issues
    • Work with Guest Lighting Designers as assigned by Resident LD/Associate LD
    • Research production specific equipment and products
    • Assist with lighting focus for daily change-over from one production to another
    • Watch performances to maintain artistic integrity of the lighting design
    • Design followspots for assigned productions in conjunction with Resident LD/Guest LD
Skills and Qualifications
    • Candidate must be capable of delivering complete lighting design paperwork with minimal supervision
    • Advanced 2d/3D/Rendering knowledge of AutoCAD, Vectorworks or other CAD programs required
    • Advanced knowledge of ETC Eos Family console software required
    • Degree in Lighting Design, or equivalent professional experience
    • Familiarity with modern stage lighting technology
    • Strong analytical ability
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to organize, prioritize and complete varied tasks quickly and accurately
    • Strong mathematical skills
    • Computer skills including but not limited to Excel and Word.
    • Understanding/familiarity with theatrical construction and scenic art operations
    • Rotating repertory experience preferred.
    • Experience with lighting previsualization software platforms preferred
    • Familiarity with computer programming languages preferred
    • Familiarity with d3 Media Servers & projection equipment preferred

    • Must be able to work well in a high-pressure/fast-paced environment
    • Establish effective working relationships and interact with a variety of personality types
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Maintain confidentiality
    • Must be able to learn and adapt to a changing work environment
    • Must be able to work successfully both independently and as part of a team
    • Regularly required to sit, talk, see, and hear
    • Frequently required to use repetitive hand motion and to stand, walk, reach, bend
    • See clearly in low-light situations such as are common backstage and in the theatre
    • Stand for a long duration during the focusing of lighting instruments
    • Walk on complex stage settings to accomplish the focus documentation of lighting instruments
    • Work weekends and evenings as necessary
    • Intercom system (headset and microphone) experience required
    • Occasionally required to lift up to 20 pounds
