THE MICHAEL'S DAUGHTER FOUNDATION is Hiring a Teaching Artist with Writing and Animation Background (Middle and High School Youth) Near Los Angeles, CA

Teaching Artist with Writing and Animation Background (Middle and High School Youth)

Locations: Van Nuys, Carson, Sylmar, Granada Hills, and Lawndale

Age Group: Middle School - High School Youth (6-12th grade)

Period: 4 Days a week for 2 hours a day

Start: August 12th, 2024

End: December 31st, 2024

Curriculum and Team Building Workshop: August 12th - 15th

Working Hours: 10 - 15 hours a week

Stipend pay: Pending on appointed locations and number of hours ~ $11,500 ($50/hour)

Responsibilities

  • Co-direct Middle School and High School Youth students at two - three locations to create 6 short films (2 per each site)
  • Develop and create engaging lesson plans with provided theme
  • Gather attendance and participation data
  • Teach 4 - 5 classes per week for 15 weeks,
  • Attend virtual bi-weekly and monthly team meetings
  • Conduct theater games and improvisation to creatively engage students
  • Deliver education and community engagement programs
  • Collaborate effectively with team members
  • Available for the Culminating Screening Event (December 2024)

Qualifications

  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to and from school sites and organizations in Van Nuys, Carson, Sylmar, Granada Hills, and Lawndale CA.
  • Minimum 2 years of Teaching Artist experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience as a professional artist: playwright, actor, filmmaker animator and/or director
  • Has taught in a school setting and is sensitive to school cultures
  • Passionate about empowering learners of all ages as creators, and critical thinkers
  • Has strong verbal and written communication skills; can guide in-depth discussions; is open to feedback
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) desired
  • Scriptwriting/creative writing experience in short film format strongly desired
  • Filmmaking skills desired
  • Social justice knowledge and background desired
  • Well-organized and has great creative instincts
  • Passionate about social justice, prison reform, and education reform

Program description

The Michaels Daughter Foundation is seeking a qualified Teaching Artist for an exciting new project with the support of the California Arts Council and Los Angeles County Justice, Care, and Opportunity Department. This in-house short filmmaking/Animation workshop series will partner with Los Angeles County and Charter schools to provide a unique and empowering experience to Middle and High School Youth.
