The Museum of Modern Art is Hiring a Storage Project Manager Near Long Island, NY

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Storage Project Manager to be based in its’ Queens NY (QNS) location. This is a two-year fixed term position with potential for renewal.

In year one, in conjunction with the art storage consultant, the incumbent will analyze and develop a plan for the development of a strategic storage plan related to the optimization of MoMA’s art storage facility in QNS. Secondarily, as part of developing the multiyear strategic storage plan, the incumbent will assist with supervising preparator responsibilities at the warehouse.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develops the goals, evaluates options, and determines schedule and budget for the strategic storage plan project, in coordination with any outside consultants, the Director of Real Estate, and the Senior Deputy Director for Exhibitions and Collections
  • Project manages, in collaboration with the aforementioned team, all aspects of the implementation of the strategic storage plan project, including NYC approvals, contract development, project logistics, regular communications and reporting, the project budget and the schedule in collaboration with MoMA’s capital projects infrastructure team.
  • Maintains and adapts current storage methods; advises Senior Manager of Art Handling and Preparation and the Director, Collection Management and Exhibition Registration (CMER) on capacity concerns and need for expansion of on- and off-site storage; assembles estimates for capital budget submission and coordinates with vendors on addition of new storage furniture, mezzanines, electrical and plumbing; coordinates and oversees approved projects.
  • Advises on specific storage needs for the collection; participates in planning of acquisition meetings to coordinate installation/display and to identify extraordinary requirements, e.g. rigging needs and offsite storage.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assists in setting and prioritizing daily schedules of Preparator responsibilities at the warehouse, including shipments and packing, viewings for internal colleagues and scholars, art storage maintenance, imaging and installation mock-ups, acquisition meetings and special projects.
  • Supervises and directs the Preparator team on assigned activities and coordinates with Registrars, Curators, Imaging and Visual Resources (IVR), and Exhibition Designers, on all requests.
  • Conducts regular inventory of storage locations and participates in regular inventory audits conducted by the Internal Audit Department; works to improve internal processes which specifically impact object tracking and locations within TMS.
  • Provides projected staffing needs to Senior Manager of Art Handling and Preparation for budget development. Participates in recruitment for temporary Preparators and coordinates hiring with the Human Resources Department.
  • Partners with the Building Operations Department to maintain and upgrade art specific spaces, e.g., loading docks, storage areas and freight elevators.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:

  • Storage and fine arts museum background, with logistics and project management expertise.
  • 10 years relevant experience in a museum or similar fine arts organization with roles progressing to team leadership.
  • Expertise in art storage, housing, and installation.
  • Knowledge of modern and contemporary art and artist’s materials, framing, packing, and shipping.
  • Experience developing and delivering storage related projects.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Data visualization.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of all equipment related to the moving and storage of artwork.
  • Facility with The Museum System (TMS).
  • Experience with project management software.
  • Experience with Crystal Reports and/or SQL a plus.
  • Experience in developing and managing project budgets and schedules.
  • MoMA participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore, if hired, individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.

Reports to: Senior Manager, Art Handling and Preparation and Director of Real Estate and Construction

Supervises: Assigned art handling staff

Salary range: Minimum of $105,000 to maximum of $115,000 per annum
