The Organization

Since 2003, The Opportunity Network (OppNet) has ignited the drive, curiosity, and agency of historically and systematically underrepresented students on their paths to and through college and into thriving careers, powered by our commitment to access and community. This year, OppNet will reach more than 10,000 students of color nationwide to support them in achieving their college and career goals.

All of the work OppNet leads is in service of realizing our vision of a nation connected through vibrant communities and networks actively in pursuit of social justice and educational equity — a nation where all young people can freely create their path to enduring success that honors their passions, ambitions, and full identities.

Our Core Values

  • Galvanize Community While Celebrating the Individual

  • Maximize the Power of Storytelling

  • Center Social and Racial Equity Relentlessly

  • Activate Solutions Through Assets, Not Deficits

  • Pursue Impact That Lasts

The Job

OppNet seeks a creative and passionate Digital Media Associate to join our team. Reporting to the Senior Communications and Engagement Coordinator, the Digital Media Associate will create and manage engaging content for our social media platforms, e-newsletter, and website. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase your skills and talents in digital media and graphic design while supporting our mission of empowering students from underrepresented communities to access and thrive in college and careers.

As our Digital Media Associate, you will be successful if you can:

  • Increase our social media followers, engagement, and reach across all platforms.

  • Create and deliver high-quality and consistent graphics, e-newsletters, and website content that reflect our brand identity and mission and appeal to our target audiences and stakeholders.

  • Use data and feedback to evaluate and improve our digital media performance and impact and identify new opportunities and trends to enhance our digital media strategy and outreach.

  • Collaborate effectively and proactively with other staff members and stakeholders, and communicate clearly and professionally with various audiences and purposes.

  • Demonstrate passion, creativity, and innovation in your work, and align your goals and actions with our organizational values and vision.

About You

The ideal candidate for the Digital Media Associate role should have relevant experience, skills, and competencies in digital media and communications. They should have a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in digital media, communications, marketing, or a related field. They should have at least two years of experience in digital media, social media, or graphic design, preferably in a non-profit or education setting. They should be proficient in using various social media platforms and tools, graphic design tools, and web development tools and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. They should also be creative, innovative, adaptable, and passionate about our mission and vision, and committed to advancing educational equity and opportunity for our students and communities.

The ideal candidate will personally connect to our important work and value diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across the organization. The candidate will demonstrate DEI values by actively participating in all organization-wide learning sessions and self-reflection and working with others to enact changes that contribute to meeting OppNet’s DEI initiatives.

What You Will Be Doing

Social Media Management (40%):

  • Plan, create, and post original and compelling content for our social media channels, including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, in alignment with our brand voice and tone.

  • Spearhead and strategize the growth of OppNet’s TikTok presence, providing guidance, suggestions, and ideas on how to use the platform to reach our communities better and tell our stories.

  • Respond to timely direct messages on OppNet’s social channels.

  • Monitor and analyze social media metrics and trends and optimize content strategy accordingly.

  • Assist the Senior Communications and Engagement Coordinator in the creation and scheduling of social media posts across OppNet’s accounts.

  • Collaborate with the Senior Communications and Engagement Coordinator and other staff members and stakeholders to ensure consistency and quality of our social media presence.

Graphic Design (20%):

  • Design and produce eye-catching graphics for social media and other materials — e.g., sell sheets and flyers — using tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or Canva.

  • Consult with other staff members and external partners to understand their graphic design needs and expectations, and provide creative solutions and feedback.

  • Follow OppNet’s brand and style guidelines and ensure consistency and quality of graphic design across all platforms and channels.

  • Organize and manage graphic design files and assets and ensure they are properly stored, labeled, and accessible.

  • Collaborate with the Senior Communications and Engagement Coordinator to write, edit, and format e-newsletters and ensure timely and accurate delivery to our subscribers.

  • Coordinate with other departments and external partners to gather relevant news, stories, and updates for e-newsletter content.

  • Ensure consistency and accuracy of e-newsletter branding, style, and tone across all platforms and devices.

  • Track and report on the e-newsletter metrics, such as open rate, click rate, conversion rate, and subscriber feedback, and provide insights and recommendations for improvement.

Organizational Learning, Development, and Program Reflection (15%):

  • Participate in organization-wide DEI learning sessions, equity working groups, and optional identity-based affinity groups.

  • Attend weekly team meetings, All Hands meetings, All Staff meetings, team retreats, and annual institution-wide retreat.
