The Department of Art, within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks a Digital Fabrication Lab Specialist to join our team. The Studios for Art and Design Research (SADR) is a shared resource for all students in the Department of Art and the Department of Design at The Ohio State University. Located on the 1st floor of Hopkins Hall, our state-of-the-art facilities comprise a diverse range of spaces that are loosely divided between Digital and Analog processes. They include the Fabrication Studio, Digital Fabrication Studio, Metals/Moldmaking Room, and CNC/Material Storage Room. Designed to cater to the needs of actively enrolled Art and Design students, as well as faculty conducting cutting-edge research, our studios serve as collaborative workspaces that encourage creativity and exploration. A spirit of collaboration is an essential component of the SADR environment and is fostered through the working relationship between staff, students, and faculty.
The Digital Fabrication Lab Specialist is a fluent practitioner of core digital processes including laser cutting, 3D printing and CNC milling; and, in partnership with the SADR Instructional Aid Specialist, assists and instructs patrons in translating their creative vision into physical objects using a variety of digital and analog methods & materials; trains and assists students on safe and appropriate use of equipment, as well as the identification and selection of non-toxic and lab-safe media; maintains an organized, clean, and well-tuned lab, with an emphasis on the troubleshooting, maintenance, and upkeep of precision machinery to maintain proper functionality; analyzes, troubleshoots and perform repair at any point in the workflow, including editing files, adjusting settings, replacing components, rebuilding equipment, and creating custom tooling for atypical projects; implements and manages an effective reservation system for general lab use and specialized equipment; develops and delivers training material for new users, including manuals, handbooks, modules, and signage; in partnership with the SADR Instructional Aid Specialist, interviews, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates all student employees to ensure all SADR studios are fully supervised for safety and functionality of all lab operations; provides administrative support to the lab which includes: personnel management, inventory, purchasing, and management of budget; and maintains up to date knowledge of digital fabrication equipment, technologies, trends, and 3D printing & modeling software to make recommendations for lab equipment purchases based on industry standards, best practices, and the curricular and research needs of the Departments of Art and Design.
Required Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and 2 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and digital fabrication equipment and working knowledge of EPA and OSHA guidelines, including the ability to read/interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in order to determine hazard levels.
Desired Education & Experience: Educational or practical experience in design or art with an emphasis on three-dimensional fabrication techniques; previous experience in managing lab staff and budget; and previous working knowledge in other areas of fabrication and production including woodworking tools and equipment, mold making, metalworking, glassblowing, ceramics, or printmaking.
Additional InformationThe pay range for this job profile is $22.16 - $29.54. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
