Job TitleEast Asian Studies Student Research Position

The student assistant will conduct genealogical research using relevant print and digital books, special collections, and databases in Korean and English, as needed. They will write well-documented reports about to the Seo family line and genealogical relationships between the Song family and prominent ancestors, including nobility, political figures, and statesmen. They will also investigate possible relations between the Seo family and Seo Jae-Pil; the family’s relationship with Yang Seong Gwan in Suwon, Korea; and Korean and English language details surrounding the name, dates, addresses, and other life details of the parents and grandparents of Seo Jeong-ah, the Song family matriarch. They will research and report on the development of Dalseong Seo Yangban society in the Late Joseon Dynasty, and other subjects as needed. Well-cited research reports (documenting bibliographical information of all sources used and consulted) will be written on all findings, even when inconclusive. Time permitting, the student will be asked to assist in the ingestion of new Korean archival materials that were recently donated to the Song Family Papers, including sorting and writing detailed inventories in Korean and English of such materials. Preference will be given to native speakers or advanced language students of Korean. Supports the Japanese Studies Librarian with outreach, acquisitions, and research projects as needed.
Required QualificationsBasic computer skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. Ability to read Korean hanja and hangul text. Ability to access and conduct research with specific family genealogical papers related to the Dalseong Seo family clan.
Additional InformationThe pay range for this position is $14.00-$16.00 per hour.
