Job Description

The Pennington School is seeking an engaged and passionate Librarian/Media Specialist to begin in August 2024. This position reports to the Dean of Academic Affairs and actively serves students and faculty members to support their information and media needs. The librarians work with all academic departments in a team-taught program of library research, information literacy, and technology skills. The ideal candidate possesses a student-centered orientation with strong collaborative and interpersonal skills, curiosity, a love of learning, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with faculty to design and teach engaging inquiry and learning experiences that incorporate multiple literacies, foster critical thinking, and promote a love of reading
  • Provide relevant embedded instruction on information literacy, ethical use of information, and citation skills to students and faculty
  • Cultivate an environment of innovation, accessibility, and advocacy
  • Work collaboratively to design, develop, and implement programs to encourage reading for enjoyment as well as information
  • Collaborate in managing daily operations of the library, which include reference services, reader's advisory, circulation, on-the-fly technology assistance, and cataloging
  • Assist with collection development and management of books, databases, periodicals, e-books, and other resources
  • Assist in creating and maintaining Libguides and managing the library's online presence
  • Supervise students in the library
  • Attend division meetings as required
  • Serve as an academic advisor after the first year and lead activities as needed
  • Attendance at School events that may include occasional weekends and evenings

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in library and information Science or relevant degree
  • Demonstrated understanding of information and media needs of students in grades 6-12
  • Familiarity with the concepts and goals of information literacy
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies as they relate to information literacy and library services
  • Experience teaching in an academic environment, preferably with students in grades 6-12
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Good social networking skills
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Enthusiasm for working with students in and out of the classroom
  • Willingness and desire to be an active member of a community that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Interest in a boarding school environment
  • Ability to work with a variety of learning styles
  • Experience/willingness to lead at least two extracurricular and/or athletic endeavors per year
  • A positive attitude, a growth mindset, and a sense of humor
  • Willingness and desire to work in a collaborative environment

This position is full-time, working on campus from August to June, exempt from overtime, and eligible for all benefits afforded to full-time Pennington School employees.
