The Policing Lab is Hiring a Crime Analyst Near Miami, FL

The Position: 

The Partnership for Policing Innovation and Reform, a public safety non-profit headquartered in Miami, seeks one (1) Crime Analyst with mid-level experience and strong communication skills.

The selected individual will work as part of our Policing Lab program in close partnership with a local police department to enhance the effective use of data and analytics in an effort to reduce gun violence and improve public safety in the Miami area. This is your chance to use your analytical skills to make a real difference in everyday lives.

The Policing Lab provides technical assistance, data analysis, and research services to reduce violent crime and increase equity in support of responsible police reform through intelligent, precise public safety strategies.

This position is embedded within a local agency, working alongside sworn officers and professional staff, and working closely within analytical and technical teams to deliver GIS and BI dashboards and other operational products. Candidate selection will emphasize teamwork, commitment, and continuous improvement.

Location:

The selected candidate will work on-site in the Miami area. This is not a remote or home-based position. 

Salary:

Compensation is competitive in Florida and commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

Required Qualifications:

  • At least two years’ experience as a crime or intelligence analyst or skill-equivalent role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Office 365.
  • Bachelor's degree required; fields of particular interest are criminal justice, economics, sociology, public policy, statistics, computer science, or similar.
  • The candidate must be a current Florida resident or a U.S. citizen who is willing to relocate (U.S. citizen or green card holder; the position is not eligible for sponsorship). 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Microsoft Business Intelligence Stack (Power BI, SSAS, SSRS, and SSIS) or comparable.
  • Experience working in the ArcGIS desktop environment (ArcMap 10.0 or higher, ArcCatalog, and preference for ArcGIS Pro and Online experience).
  • Experience with an array of geoprocessing workflows and strategies for GIS data analysis, particularly in an operational environment.
  • Experience with a self-service tool such as Power BI is strongly preferred.
  • General understanding of SQL.
  • Knowledge and critical understanding of crime policy and violence research.

Job functions:

  • Understand business requirements in the BI context and design products that convert raw data to meaningful insights.
  • Create dashboards and interactive visual reports using Power BI or similar tools for use by various levels of law enforcement personnel.
  • Analyze data and present insights to support decision-making and accountability workflow.
  • Perform or collaborate on SQL querying of public safety data.
  • Make technical changes to existing BI systems to enhance their performance.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Assist in developing, updating, analyzing, and managing GIS data for various professional services.
  • Analyze law enforcement data to identify crime patterns and trends.
  • Create tables, charts, and maps utilizing information from multiple databases.
  • Prepare recommendations for the allocation of available resources.
  • Provide technical assistance to officers across various analytical tools and products.
  • Present findings to managers and partner agencies.
  • Regularly communicate project status effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in developing project strategies, including technical approaches, resource planning, and project schedules.
  • Frequently produce maps and dashboards to support accountability meetings and other reporting or presentations.
  • Assist with data-gathering from public and private sources to support geospatial projects (e.g., land survey records search, local regulations, etc.).
