The Public Interest Network is Hiring a Social Media Manager Near Oakland, CA

The Public Interest Network is hiring a digital campaigner to help us reach millions of Americans online through social media, email action lists and engaging digital content. Whether we’re working to pass a ballot initiative to invest $1 billion in new state parks in Texas, ban toxic bee-killing pesticides in Colorado, create a state program for solar panels along highways in California, or stop significant new ratepayer hikes for fossil fuel infrastructure in Illinois, we need to let people know about our campaigns, identify supporters, and engage them. The digital campaigner will work with our state offices across the country, from Alaska to Colorado to Florida, on environmental, public health, and consumer protection campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

The digital campaigner will work in partnership with our state directors and advocates to craft and execute online and email content for our priority campaigns. This position requires excellent judgment and discretion and the ability to oversee significant projects. Representative responsibilities include:

  • Increase the visibility of Environment America and PIRG’s state and local environmental and public interest campaigns with our existing supporters and the public by developing and executing engaging online content, email content, and online actions to build support for our campaigns.
  • Build a bigger following for our priority campaigns: Increase our followers on social media, and add people to our email lists.
  • By activating our lists around local issues, help our state offices win more policy victories.
  • Identify other influential voices online that can support and share our actions and work together to recruit other powerful messengers to share our campaigns.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have 1-3 years of relevant experience, but entry-level candidates with a passion for our issues, mission, and values and a strong desire to build a better world with their life are encouraged to apply.

A top candidate will have these qualities:

  • You can write and edit fast and accurately. You’re a student of communication. You understand how to tell stories differently in a tweet versus a 7-minute long-read, and how to make text and visuals work synergistically.
  • You’re creative. Both in how information is presented, and how we reach new audiences. You’re willing to try and fail, adapt and succeed.
  • You have the technical aptitude we need. You either already have or are hungry for and capable of building tech skills fast. And you always sweat the details. We need someone who can be trusted to get the codes and links right, and the email messages to the exact lists we want.
  • You’re organized and focused on getting work accomplished. You aren’t just coming up with creative ideas, you are executing them thoroughly and efficiently.
  • You’re driven to change the world. The planet needs saving, and you’re ready to help save it. You believe we can organize our lives to be healthier, safer and less wasteful, and you’re ready to do your part to make it happen. You’re looking for a calling, not just a job.

Compensation & Benefits

The starting target annual compensation range is $32,500-$38,100 and depends on relevant experience, education and location. The Public Interest Network offers an excellent benefits package. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, paid time off, our commuter benefit program, a 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long term disability insurance, and may include needs-based student loan assistance. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

Location

This position could be based in Oakland, CA; Denver, CO; Austin TX.

About The Public Interest Network

The Public Interest Network operates and supports more than a dozen organizations – including PIRG, Environment America and their state affiliates – committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to change.

Our work focuses on the problems that arise from America’s single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth: We’re still burning fossil fuels even though it’s changing the climate. We keep giving antibiotics to healthy livestock, even though it leads to “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant. We use plastic products for a few minutes only to throw them away so they pollute the oceans for centuries.

And our approach is unique: We focus on the big picture, but are relentlessly pragmatic and prioritize making a difference in people’s lives over making a statement. We work with everybody to make change happen, political ideology aside, championing good ideas wherever they come from. And we are serious about the work -- we set clear goals, benchmarks and systems to measure our progress, and hold ourselves accountable to making change now and building for the future.

This unique approach gives our staff an opportunity to make a concrete difference for the environment and the public interest -- just as hundreds of dedicated staff have done over our 50 year history. If you want to add to this change-making legacy; if you have the passion and the drive that it takes; if you're looking for a mission, not just a job -- then let’s talk.
