VEHICLE/EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
Under general supervision, performs skilled, journey-level work in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy gasoline and diesel driven equipment and vehicles; maintains maintenance schedules and records for equipment; maintains vehicle safety inspection records.
- Full-time position
- $40.00 – $45.00/hour (commensurate with experience)

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Repairs or overhauls all Association and Water Company vehicles and equipment as necessary, including diesel engines and light equipment; uses torches and welders in fabrication and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment; maintains equipment maintenance schedules and records; inspects applicable equipment in accordance with requirements of D.O.T. and CA DMV B.I.T. program; inspects all equipment and vehicles and makes recommendations regarding repair or replacement; coordinates and performs construction or facility repair projects; orders and purchases materials and tools necessary to the performance of these functions; assists Director of Facilities and Resources in research and purchase of equipment; other duties as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Equipment Mechanic is a non-exempt hourly position reporting directly to the Director of Facilities and Resources. The position may be part time or full time. Supervise maintenance workers on specific equipment related repairs as necessary. The Equipment Mechanic comes in frequent contact with Association vendors and contractors.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Preferred Education and Experience
At least five years’ experience as journeyman auto mechanic with experience in gasoline and diesel engine repair; at least three years’ experience in welding fabrication; high school diploma or equivalent, otherwise ability to read and write English and perform basic mathematical calculations sufficient to perform tasks required; basic computer literacy and skills; valid California driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle report essential, Class A license required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of current practices of engine repair and maintenance, preventive maintenance programs and record keeping; operational knowledge of heavy equipment such as dozers, tractors, mowers, chippers and dump trucks for the purpose of testing, adjusting and maintaining; able to operate all TSRA equipment; knowledge of parts and materials control procedures; ability to write clear and concise reports; ability to communicate effectively with other departmental staff and outside vendors and contractors.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS OR TASKS TO BE COMPLETED:
- Analyze and diagnose source of mechanical problems or failures on all gasoline or diesel powered light and heavy equipment
- Repair and overhaul gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, clutch and brake systems, electrical systems, pumps and other major vehicular, small, and heavy equipment components
- Maintain equipment maintenance schedules and records
- Inspect vehicles, machines, tools and facility equipment and make recommendations regarding repair or replacement
- Assist Director of Facilities and Resources in research and purchase of equipment and compliance with CARB, State and Federal EPA, Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery
- Act as lead worker in directing Maintenance Workers in assisting with any projects related to the position
- Order supplies and materials associated with vehicle and equipment maintenance
Work History/Skills
- Minimum five years’ experience as a journeyman auto mechanic with experience in gasoline and diesel repair
- Ability to diagnose source of mechanical problems and recommend most effective course of action for repair or replacement
- Ability to organize and document vehicle and equipment maintenance schedules
- Ability to use modern diagnostic equipment
Education/Training
- High school diploma or equivalent; or ability to read and write English and perform basic mathematical calculations necessary to performing the essential tasks of the job
- Training in gasoline and diesel mechanics in a wide variety of light and heavy equipment
- Valid California driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle report required, Class A license required
- Basic computer literacy

Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding job. The Equipment Mechanic is required to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects on a regular basis, and perform repetitive tasks with breaks.
The Equipment Mechanic is expected:
- to meet all Department of Transportation health requirements to access the Class A commercial driver’s license;
- to have the ability to work in confined spaces and to work safely in potentially dangerous environments;
- to lift and/or exert force up to 50 pounds two thirds (2/3) of the on-the-job time;
- to lift and/or exert force up to 100 pounds one third (1/3) of the on-the-job time.
Two-thirds (2/3) of the Equipment Mechanic’s on-the-job time is spent:
- standing, walking, sitting, lifting,
- using hands and fingers to handle and feel,
- reaching with hands and arms,
- climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling,
- talking, hearing and smelling.
The Equipment Mechanic job has the following vision requirements:
- close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less;
- distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more;
- color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors);
- peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point;
- depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships;
- ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
