JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Manager, Communications
Department: Marketing & Communications
Reports to: Vice President, Communications
Status: Exempt
Primary Objective: Responsible for creating and managing business and external communications strategies to optimize and maximize positive exposure for the Seattle Mariners at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
Essential Functions:
  • Manage the off-field brand and business communications, seeking new, improved, and innovative ways to increase awareness and optimize positive brand exposure through communications.
  • Identify and implement communications strategies to support business objectives.
  • Lead the organization's direct-earned media strategy for media relations with non-baseball media.
  • Proactively identify and build stories around key organizational priorities.
  • Help develop and direct implementation of strategic communications plans and messaging framework that align with company mission and business objectives.
  • Lead the identification, development, pitching, and placement of stories in top-tier lifestyle, business, and sports publications/outlets.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with key media contacts to place the Mariners in top media outlets.
  • Collaborate and assist in the implementation of strategic communications plans and messaging framework that align with Mariners mission and business objectives.
  • Act, as needed, as spokesperson to public, media, and community (non-baseball communications).
  • Build and maintain relationships with key local, regional, national, and international media, trade, business, and lifestyle media outlets spanning broadcast, print and digital.
  • Assist in coordinating internal messaging and media strategy for crisis communications.
  • Assist and facilitate, as needed, executive leadership on communications and messaging (including talking points, key messages, FAQs, speech preparation, etc.).
  • Monitor, track and analyze impact of messaging and media outreach through Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) and metrics to evaluate reach and effectiveness and ensure media strategy aligns with objectives.
  • Contribute content to various platforms including Mariners.com, Corner of Edgar and Dave (blog), intranet, podcasts, radio/TV broadcasts, social channels, etc.
  • Maintain close relations with leadership and communications associates for Public Facilities District and other pertinent public agencies.
  • Attend games and other events as necessary to maintain media contacts and execute earned media strategy.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience :
  • Bachelor's degree required. Equivalent, relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education if approved by management.
  • A minimum of five years of broad brand management, public relations and/or media experience required.
  • A consistent track record of pitching and securing top-tier press coverage is required.
  • Deep knowledge of and passion for lifestyle trends spanning art, fashion, music and beyond preferred.
  • Relevant sports knowledge, which includes familiarity with Major League Baseball, preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Must be available to work select home games (March through September). Early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

  • Ability to collaborate and interact with key internal stakeholders including Mariners executives and the larger communications group as well as external media partners
  • Sound business judgment; knows what makes compelling press work.
  • Well-informed about innovative practices in Public Relations (PR.).
  • Handles sensitive and/or confidential information professionally, involving only those who need to be involved or informed.

The Mariners are committed to providing competitive pay, perks, and benefits packages for our valued Team Members. The anticipated salary range for this role is $75,000- $100,000 annually, based on candidate's skills, experience, and business or organizational needs.
