Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a part-time OPS Health Educator position for the Gadsden County Health Department. The incumbent provides nutrition and breastfeeding education direct services for participants enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Program, for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The incumbent is expected to complete specific duty training related to life cycle nutrition principals and breastfeeding. This position will require the ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Gadsden WIC Program Support

Provides individual nutrition counseling for low-risk WIC clients. Utilizes diet histories, medical history, anthropometric and laboratory data to develop appropriate assessments. Documentation required in clients’ medical record (FL-WiSE), using established progress notes and agency protocol; only approved abbreviations are used. Establishes appropriate goals and follow-up plans for all clients. Identifies and refers all high-risk and medically high-risk clients to CPA and/or licensed nutritionist for evaluation and assessment. Instructs all new participants in the use of WIC EBT/How WIC Works pamphlet. Refer clients to other health and local social services, as needed. Interviews participants to obtain demographic information and completes necessary forms with the required signatures and dates. Advises WIC participants of their rights and obligations. Performs eligibility duties at certification of new clients and recertification of existing clients. Incumbent verifies eligibility requirements with all clients. Provides voter registration assistance; at the time the client applies for services, when the client is recertified, or when client reports an address change. Incumbent will also assist with benefit issuance, discuss available benefits, and review benefits for accuracy. Incumbent informs participant when certification expires and what is required for recertification. Assists with scheduling next appointment prior to client leaving clinic. Answers incoming calls to WIC office, assists with callers’ needs by scheduling appointment, providing appointment dates, transferring calls to respective team members, etc.

Organize and executive WIC program and client feedback monitoring and reporting. Performs accurate weights, heights, and hemoglobin tests, as needed, for certification of WIC clients. Performs follow-up weights, heights, and hemoglobin tests, as directed by the WIC nutrition staff (CPA, nutrition educator, nutritionist). Staff inputs collected data in FL-WiSE charting system.

Attend required CHD meetings and participate in WIC outreach events promoting breastfeeding and/or WIC services. Perform other related duties as assigned and by management. If fluent in another language, may be required to assist with translation to ensure quality client services.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge, skills and proficiency in use of computer, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), FL-WiSE and phone system.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of training or instruction.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to promote WIC services in a professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing and orally as indicated by the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to initiate, work independently, highly organized and attentive to details.
  • Ability to be discrete and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.
  • Ability to actively listen to others.
  • Ability to design and produce health promotion and public health educational materials.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s or master’s degree from a U.S accredited university or college in health education, nutritional science, community health/nutrition, clinical nutrition, dietetics, and/or public health nutrition.
