Compensation
Salary commensurate with experience; expected hiring range $105,000 - $130,000/year

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a dynamic leader and experienced litigator to head the Criminal Division’s Major Crimes section. Major Crimes attorneys work in conjunction with county and district attorneys to initiate and prosecute major felony cases statewide, with a focus on homicides and off-grid child sex crimes.

This position will lead a team of criminal prosecutors and support staff. This is an opportunity to litigate complex criminal cases in district courts across the state, as well as to mentor and supervise other attorneys in the section. The successful candidate will have an exemplary record as an ethical litigator and a vision to improve and expand the work of the Major Crimes section.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising a team of capable professionals with diverse skills and expertise to ensure matters are consistently investigated and prosecuted proactively, efficiently, and with reasonable speed.
  • Developing and presenting training to law enforcement and prosecutors statewide.
  • Maintaining a criminal caseload consistent with the First AAG’s other duties.

Qualifications

Licensing & Certification

  • Membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas or eligible for admission without examination.
  • A valid driver’s license

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least four years of experience as a state, federal, or military criminal prosecutor or criminal defense attorney.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience supervising attorneys or related staff (e.g., investigators, legal secretaries, analysts)
  • At least eight years of experience as a state, federal, or military prosecutor
  • Significant experience litigating homicide cases in state court

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements

  • As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment screening process to include a fingerprint and name-based criminal history records check and reference/background check of past and present employers. The pre-employment screening process will be waived for current OAG personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.
