The University of Georgia is Hiring a Postdoctoral Associate (Cucurbit Breeding & Genetics) Near Athens, GA

The Cucurbit Breeding, Genetics and Genomics lab (https://mcgregorlab.uga.edu/) at the University of Georgia (Athens) searches for an energetic and creative Post-Doctoral Associate. The applicant will participate in cucurbit breeding for resistance to diseases as part of a team of molecular biologists, plant pathologists, entomologists and extension faculty in the southeastern USA. The primary goal of this position is to drive the identification and introgression of resistance loci and candidate genes in cucurbits. The position also offers the opportunity to assist with the development of new projects in this space and in other related areas.

Responsibilities

Applied Bioinformatic analysis to aid cultivar development and molecular biology laboratory activities related to identification and introgression of disease resistant loci in cucurbits.

Population development, phenotyping and genotyping for disease resistance in cucurbits.

Manuscript and grant writing.

Assisting with the daily operations of the laboratory. Assisting with the supervision and training of students. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have a PhD in plant breeding, genetics, plant pathology or related field, and skills/experience required to carry-out molecular breeding experiments using genomics and applied bioinformatics to accelerate cultivar development, as well as a good publication track record.

The applicant should be fluent in English (oral and written) and be able to communicate ideas to colleagues and conference attendees. The successful applicant can work independently as well as on a team, and supervise students in the lab, greenhouse and field. This position requires expertise in genomics such as genome-wide associations and marker assisted selection, and bioinformatics, as well as understanding analysis for different breeding schemes. A candidate that understands plant pathology/plant-pathogen interactions is highly desirable.

Ability to work outdoors any time of year, ability to lift 50 lbs. Work in a laboratory for multiple hours a day. This position involves out-of-town travel to research plots, including occasional overnight stay. Weekend watering and pollination of plants in the greenhouse are assigned on a rotational basis. Georgia driving license required.
