The University of Kansas is Hiring a Student Hourly Digital Media Assistant Near Lawrence, KS

Job DescriptionAre you interested in making video content for TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube? Do you enjoy taking photos and want a chance to let your skills shine? Do you want to gain experience working alongside an art director as part of a social media team and brainstorming ideas for short videos and content creation plans? Then this job is for you!
The Undergraduate Biology Department is looking for a creative, curious, and project focused student for the position of Digital Media Assistant. This student will help tell the story of Undergraduate Biology and provide a student perspective on our social media platforms and other digital channels. This person will support marketing efforts with videography, photography, and media production projects.
The ideal candidate has experience with videography and photography, is passionate about social media and knowledgeable of digital marketing trends, should be comfortable collaborating in team settings, and is able to incorporate feedback and meet deadlines for finished work.
This position will work alongside Undergraduate Biology’s Communications Coordinator, Maria Losito.
60% Content Creation
  • Shoot & edit shortform videos & montages or longer form personality profiles for various social platforms including IG stories, IG Reels, TikTok & YouTube.
  • Take photos for social media and news articles.
  • Write social media blurbs to go along with video posts.
30% Planning Social Content
  • Brainstorm & collaborate with your supervisor to develop content for social media.
5% Research Social media Trends
  • Stay up to date with the latest trends in social media & the higher education industry.
5% Community Engagement
  • Help foster opportunities for community engagement within the biology departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
This position will work during the academic year (fall 2024 and spring 2025); availability over academic breaks is not required.
Required Qualifications
  • During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
  • Photography and photo editing skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Videography and video editing skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Basic audio editing skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Evidence of strong communication & content creation skills, as demonstrated in application materials.
  • Experience planning, shooting, editing videos & audio for TikTok or Instagram as seen in provided sample of work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Be an experienced user of social media platforms (TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube) and the content editing tools available on those platforms.
  • Have a strong understanding of, and affinity for, social media and social networking with the ability to efficiently research trends and best practices.
  • Past volunteer, internship, or employment experience where marketing and communications skills were used.
  • Highly organized, detailed and an excellent communicator.
  • Self-starter and proficient in time management.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Positive attitude and a history of strong work ethic.
  • Majoring in journalism, film, design, communications, marketing, or a related field
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite or other video editing software and an ability to learn new software quickly.

Advertised Salary Range

Work Schedule
This on-campus position allows you to work up to 10 hours each week, between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students with schedules that have blocks of free time on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays are preferred. If previously discussed with the supervisor, occasional projects may be completed remotely and outside of standard working hours.
