Summary

• The Hospital Safety Specialist is responsible for performing a variety of complex duties in support of a loss control program to prevent employee on-the-job accidents.
• Responsibilities include the periodic inspection of various facilities, buildings and equipment, preparation of reports detailing findings and recommendations, investigation of industrial findings and recommendations, investigation of industrial accidents and the provision of educational training course for employees and supervisors to prevent on-the-job injuries.
• Incumbents may be responsible for the development of a loss control program for a County department engaged in large-scale industrial operations.
• Supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical and clerical employees that assist with various phases of a safety program.
• Supervision is received from a professional or administrative superior through personal conferences and review of written reports for satisfactory completion of assigned responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the promotion and implementation of environmental health and safety programs for the Public Health Trust (PHT).
• Assists in the coordination of employee safety programs and education.
• Keeps custody of inspection reports pertaining to environmental health and safety issues, and ensures follow-up action.
• Acts as a consultant regarding environmental health and safety to Public Health Trust management.
• Maintains current knowledge of environmental health, safety issues and informs employees and management regarding issues that affect the health care industry.
• Participates on hospital committees related to environmental health and safety.
• Promotes compliance with environmental and safety codes and regulations at Federal, State and local levels.
• Performs inspections and assessments in the area of safety and environment.
• Maintains custody of confidential records and files.
• Conducts fire drills for the hospital according to JCAHO, AHCA, and NFPA regulations.
• Maintains custody of confidential records and files.
• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Continuous Quality Improvement opportunities.
• Collaborates with relevant departments to implement, review, and revise system-wide and unit-specific policies pertaining to the management of the Environment of Care: safety, hazardous materials and waste, fire safety, utilities system, etc.
• Assists in the preparation of reports, recommendations, actions taken and results of measurements to the managers and administration of the Public Health Trust.

• Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience
Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.
Education
High school diploma is required.
