Position Summary | The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School. |
Additional Details | Department/Office Mission: The mission of the Division of Student Success is to work in partnership with the University community to deliver high quality services to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse student population and strive to provide service, leadership, and transitional student support for UNCG. The Division of Student Success is committed to designing, implementing, and providing the services necessary to promote student success throughout the entire student life cycle from day one to diploma. This division includes the offices of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, University Advising, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Students First Office, Academic Achievement Center, TRiO Programs, UNCG Guarantee, GEAR UP UNCG, and the Multiliteracy Centers (Speaking Center, Writing Center, and Math Help Center). Job Description-Reporting: The Graduate Assistant for Student Success is intended to be a two-year assistantship and reports directly to the Associate Vice Provost for Retention & Student Success. Job Description-Job Duties and/or Responsibilities: Spartans Thrive is a university-wide, holistic health and wellness initiative for students enrolling for the first time in college (FTIC). Spartans Thrive is the University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) which is a component of the reaffirmation process that reflects and affirms the commitment of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College (SACSCOC) to enhancing the quality of higher education in the region and to focusing attention on student learning. The QEP Graduate Assistants will support the implementation of Spartans Thrive through completing research and writing projects, supporting assessment and data analysis efforts, assisting in the coordination of committee meetings and events, and handling other administrative and partnership efforts. General responsibilities will also include creating marketing and outreach materials, helping lead the student engagement aspect of the project, assisting with website content development, and participating in meetings and committees as a member of the QEP staff team. Main QEP efforts include, but are not limited to:
Work Hours, Environment: The UNCG Graduate Assistant Work Schedule is the basis for determining the work schedule. Graduate Assistants typically work 20 hours/week, during office hours, which are generally Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. but can include evening hours for student programming. The supervisor will work with the graduate assistant to accommodate their academic course schedule. Vacation and travel requests during the academic year should be discussed prior to finalizing plans (example: booking a flight, etc.). Required Skills or Prerequisites: This position includes student contact and requires an individual who demonstrates the following:
Stipend: $15,000 for the academic year The stipend amount and hours per week allotted for this position are contingent on budget continuity for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which is subject to change based on UNC System guidelines. If summer assistantship work is agreed, an additional stipend will be provided. Tuition Waiver/Assistance: In-state tuition waiver provided for fall/spring semester |
Minimum Qualifications | To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must: * Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0). * Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits. * Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School. * Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S. |
