The University of South Dakota TRIO Educational Talent Search programhas an immediate opening for a full-time10-month advisorto join their team in Sioux Falls, SD.

This position assists students in grades 6-12 in the identification, preparation, and attainment of their educational goals.

The goals of the program include that participants finish high school in the standard four years, graduate, and enroll in postsecondary education the following fall.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to be the day-to-day face of our program in at least two schools in the Sioux Falls School District.

The TRIO Talent Search Advisor will

  • Maintain a cooperative relationship and collaborate with the schools, staff, and parents of students enrolled in the TRIO Talent Search program.
  • Meet with participants each week in classroom settings, small group meetings, and / or individual visits.
  • Plan and carry out activities designed to help students succeed in school, graduate from high school, and enroll in postsecondary education.
  • Provide academic assistance including study skills and goal setting activities and encourage, conduct, or arrange tutoring as needed.
  • Collect and disseminate information regarding postsecondary institutions, student financial aid, admissions, housing, and academic assistance programs.
  • Arrange and conduct campus visits to colleges for TRIO Talent Search participants.
  • Maintain a record keeping system including student files to document student assistance and all professional activity.
  • Serve as a student advocate and mentor.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, school counseling, or a related field is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of students from varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of secondary and postsecondary education requirements.
  • The ability to relate to middle school, high school, and postsecondary students.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities.
