Instrumental Music Teacher (Grades 7-12)

Salary: $45,000 per year, based on qualifications.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Status:  Exempt Regular Full-Time 

Annual Days: 196

The mission of The Vanguard School is to help guide students in development of their character and academic potential through academically rigorous, content-rich educational programs.

General Purpose: The Secondary Instrumental Music Teacher (Grades 7-12) is responsible for developing student understanding of instrumental music, while expanding their knowledge of Western Culture by infusing time-appropriate cultural and historical characteristics. Overall, they would be responsible for providing students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to develop academic excellence, virtue, and leadership. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Demonstrates subject matter knowledge.
  • Start and rehearse new instrumentalists and reinforce fundamentals with adherence to the school’s curriculum. 
  • Teaches materials related to general appreciation and comprehension of music as well as to the learning of performance techniques.
  • Teach and rehearse in a variety of styles of music from Baroque to Contemporary.
  • Teaches Music History, covering the appropriate eras as designated by school curriculum.
  • Teaches a variety of classes within the scope of band and orchestra instruments.
  • Prepare students for performance in concerts. 
  • Prepare for and perform at school events. 
  • Prepare and perform in various civic events. 
  • Coordinate and attend instrumental rental night.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities as assigned.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs as assigned.
  • Communicated with parents and department chair to discuss student progress.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with students.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with students, educational staff, and parents.
  • Has the ability to work cooperatively with school staff and administration.
  • Upholds and implements school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy.

Plans curriculum and instruction:

  • Delivers effective instruction Manages classroom climate and operation. 
  • Promotes achievement. 
  • Meets professional responsibilities.
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities: As needed or assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree, preferably in Instrumental Music, with at least 36 semester hours in content area.

Experience:

Prior teaching experience is not required but preferred.
