Our Y is committed to DEI work, and seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative CDO to lead our Financial Development & Marketing departments.
Job DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY:The Chief Development & Engagement Officer (CDO) has the responsibility for the implementation of all the Ann Arbor YMCA’s Financial Development programs, oversight of the Marketing Department, and ensures strategic alignment through programs and expansion initiatives at the Ann Arbor Y. This includes but is not limited to Annual Campaign, Capital Campaign, Grant Management, Planned Giving, Endowment, Year End Donations, and Special Events. The CDO is responsible for the professional leadership and supervision of the Marketing Director and develops and manages the Financial Development and Marketing budgets. This key position ensures that Financial Development goals are met or exceeded each year, community engagement is prioritized and measurables are tracked to ensure organization alignment with the strategic plan. The CDO shall have a commitment to advancing a culture of philanthropy throughout the association, with all staff, volunteers, members, and program participants.
The Chief Development & Engagement is part of the senior leadership team and plays a major role in setting the marketing and fundraising direction of the Association, with their work to be supervised and directed by the CEO. The CDO also collaborates with the Board of Directors and the rest of the senior leadership team, to provide opportunities for the entire Association to become involved with and engaged in the advancement of our mission.
The Y’s long-term goal is to position ourselves as a charity of choice and to achieve 15% of our annual revenue through philanthropy.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Five (5) or more years of professional fundraising experience in the YMCA or another nonprofit field with a background of fundraising in the Y preferred.
  • Proven ability to relate to top community leaders and to recruit and stimulate their participation in securing financial support.
  • Clear, concise writing and public speaking skills.
  • Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.
  • Experience in all aspects of fundraising, including annual campaigns, major gifts, grant writing, online giving, planned giving, special events and capital campaigns preferred.
  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community; track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
  • An extraordinary level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Access to transportation and the ability to travel locally and regionally on a consistent basis.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to twenty pounds.

Essential FunctionsCORE AND STRATEGIC FUNCTIONS:Financial Development Activities – Capital Campaign
  • Develops the case for capital campaigns and establishes timelines.
  • Develops and implements capital campaign plans including identifying, recruiting, training, and managing campaign leadership and volunteers, identifying capital campaign prospects, preparing support materials, cultivating and tracking relationships and personally securing donations.
  • Works with the CEO to establish and support a Capital Campaign Committeeand reports regularly to the CEO and Board of Directors on the status of the capital campaign.
Financial Development Activities – Annual Campaign
  • Plans, develops, implements, and tracks the Annual Campaign.
  • Utilize data analytics and performance metrics to assess the effectiveness of fundraising strategies. Implement data-driven decision-making processes to enhance the efficiency and impact of development initiatives.
  • Works directly with all divisions of the Annual Campaign including but not limited to Community Volunteers, Board of Directors, and Staff divisions; with personal solicitation required to increase both the number of campaigners and donors.
  • Works with the CEO to coordinate the Board of Directors Annual campaign.
  • Responsible for administering all aspects of the Annual Campaign, including working with the MarketingDirector to create organizational charts, pledge cards, marketing materials, etc.
Financial Development Activities – Grant Management
  • Responsible for the timely preparation and presentation of grant applications and post grant reporting.
  • Responsible for the grant tracking of all personal, coordinator, director, senior leader, and CEO grant writing efforts.
  • Coordinates research to identify and analyze appropriate funding sources including governmental, foundations, corporate and private funders.
Financial Development Activities – Endowment & Other Fundraising
  • Coordinates and implements fundraising and other special events.
  • Works with the CEO to develop and implement a YMCA Planned Giving Program.
  • Works with senior leadership team and Marketing Director to develop sponsorship materials for fundraising solicitation for various Y programs.
  • Manages vehicle donation program.
  • Collaborates with Marketing Director to develop and disseminate fundraising collateral such as solicitation pieces, thank you letters, cases for support, invitations, multi-media and other materials for website, email marketing, online video and social media sites, crowdfunding, etc.
  • In conjunction with the Finance Department, oversees Endowment tracking and reporting.
Marketing & Community Engagement
  • Recruit, train, and supervise Marketing Director.
  • Establish and implement a plan to increase the consistency, reach and impact of all Y messaging. Work with department heads to achieve this plan, while addressing local needs.
  • Along with the CEO, represent the organization at public events, conferences, and meetings to enhance its visibility and reputation.
  • Strengthen public relations, by creating opportunities to raise visibility and increase understanding of the Y, including our nonprofit status, DIG/Equity work, and benefits to the community.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and the senior leadership team to create the vision and strategy needed to elevate the Y's brand among various funding sources and activate their philanthropy.
  • Oversee the development of testimonials and Y stories from members, volunteers, donors, and staff for use throughout our marketing/communication efforts.
Fiscal Management
  • Develops, implements, and monitors budgets for Association’s Finanical Development and Marketing departments.
  • Directs the accounting related aspects of fundraising including documentation of contributions, billings to contributors, and monitoring of collections.
  • Supervises and ensures gift accounting and reporting functions, maintains integrity of donor procedure, and ensures that all donors receive appropriate and timely acknowledgements of their gifts.
Stewardship and Cultivation
  • Utilizes Moves Management techniques in building relationships with donors and creating long term relationships with them. Records visits and interactions of all staff with current and prospective donors.
  • Cultivates and stewards both existing and prospective donors year-round through intentional relationship building strategies such as personal visits, telephone calls, correspondence, etc.
  • Directs acknowledgement/tax receipt letter process with the assistance of Executive and Fundraising Coordinator.
  • Maps out annual communication (touch) calendar and ensures appropriate communication (with the assistance of the Marketing Director) with each target area.
  • Develops donor research and analysis with a goal to increase and expand the donor base.
  • Creates and directs appropriate recognition systems for capital, annual and planned giving campaign donors and campaign volunteers.
  • Develops an accountability system to celebrate success throughout all fundraising campaigns, at the Association Office, branches, program locations and with all levels of volunteers.
Operating & Strategic Values
  • Serves as a member of Y senior leadership team and supports the overall strategy and objectives of the YMCA.
  • Creates and evaluates a Marketing and Fundraising departmental strategy and plan.
  • Ability to work independently in a complex environment, managing conflicting priorities, with internal and external diplomacy, while maintaining integrity and confidentiality.
  • Proactively provides fundraising reports and donor prospect research to the CEO.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the total organization by understanding the Mission, Vision, Diversity & Inclusion and Strategic Goals of the Ann Arbor YMCA.
  • Conduct research and analysis on various topics to support the CEO, CFO, and the Senior Leadership Team in decision-making processes.
  • Assist in developing strategic plans and objectives for the Y.
  • Acts as a role model of the Ann Arbor Y and projects a positive image in the community.
  • Incorporates Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices into work products and behavior.

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERRequired Certifications
CFRE preferred.
YMCA Organizational Leader preferred or a commitment to achieve the certification within two years.
