Thurston County Public Health and Social Services is recruiting for an Education and Outreach Specialist I – Mental Health position in our Community Wellness division for the Maternal Child Health Program.

The Maternal Child Health Program at PHSS aims to reduce health inequalities and improve public health by providing underserved and vulnerable populations with high-quality, trauma-informed resources. As an Education and Outreach Specialist I, you will work closely with the Community Wellness Maternal Child Health programs with the focus of supporting mental health work. You will utilize data to understand risks and gaps in the Thurston County community. An important part of your job will be to collaborate and build partnerships with schools, providers, service providers, and others to identify strategies to promote mental health and reduce the negative impact of mental health complications.
 
Some of the essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Work with community partners to strategize and develop a plan to improve mental health.
• Review and identify data for strengths and areas of needed improvement.
• Perform outreach activities that build and strengthen our community partnerships.
• Analyze program information and provide program recommendations to team members.
• Assist with identifying grants and funding opportunities for addressing mental health concerns.
• Assist with the completion of deliverables and reports as required by contracts, grants, and funders.
• Develop and maintain strategic relationships with community groups, coalitions, and other community stakeholders, which may include attending or presenting at community meetings and trainings.
• Presenting information on mental health in the community.
• Developing health education/messages. 
• Developing and distributing educational information for community members and partners.
• Prepare tables, graphs, charts, and other statistical reports.
• Collaboratively works as a team member with others to ensure program effectiveness.
• Perform other work as required or assigned including but not limited to a 24/7 response during public health emergency situations and disease outbreak investigations.

The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Experience analyzing data and information and forming accurate and objective conclusions and recommendations.
• Motivational Interviewing training and experience.
• Knowledge of local health and human service agencies and geography of Thurston County is preferred.

• Bachelor's degree in education, public health, environmental health, environmental science, or other closely related field. Additional experience can be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
• Must have three years experience working in public health, environmental issues, or other related field promoting education, outreach, media campaign, public relations or other comparable experiences to successfully perform duties and responsibilities of the classification.
• Must have the ability to utilize a personal computer with related software to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Current Washington State Driver's License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
• A professional certification applicable to area of assignment is highly desired (examples: Pesticide Applicator, Public Health Educator Certification, Hazardous Waste Health and Safety training, etc.).
